One Cowboys WR is making plenty of noise in OTA’s

Could a sleeper wide receiver force a veteran to be cut?

The Cowboys have a jam-packed wide receiver room finishing up OTA’s and heading into training camp. With Amari Cooper leading the charge, Randall Cobb providing veteran versatility, and Michael Gallup set for a big second-year jump, sorting out the fourth, fifth, and possibly even sixth wide receiver spot will be one of the key focuses come training camp.

With young players such as; Cedrick Wilson, Jon’Vea Johnson, Jalen Guyton, Devin Smith, Lance Lenoir, and Noah Brown all battling for spots against veterans Allen Hurns, and Tavon Austin, it’s easy to forget about one receiver also battling for a 53-man roster spot. Don’t sleep on a young but veteran receiver, Reggie Davis, who has reportedly had himself a very nice few weeks of practice.

Reggie Davis, a third-year NFL player, has bounced around the league after going undrafted in the 2017 NFL draft. Davis signed with the Falcons as an UDFA after posting impressive pro day numbers at the University of Georgia. According to multiple sources, Davis posted a 4.31 40-yard dash at Georgia’s pro day back in 2017. Davis has been using that speed to impress coaches, and media members so far in OTA practices.

Wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal had some positive words to describe Davis so far in 2019:

“He was probably our most improved (receiver),” said Sanjay Lal, Davis’ position coach. “If we go back to when we got him last October/November, he’s probably the most improved guy on the team. He made a big jump this week.”

Lal also provided some specifics about why Davis has been so improved in practices.

“He’s really understanding how to use his speed. He’s always been fast, but how to truly use it. How to stop better, how to set up DBs, he’s doing a great job. And he’s finishing plays with catches.”

Davis spent all of last season on the Cowboys practice squad after spending time with the Falcons, Browns, Eagles, and now the Cowboys. That time on the practice squad was a huge benefit according to Davis.

“It’s everything – being able to set up DBs, learning how to get in and out of breaks on certain routes, knowing how to tempo routes, change of pace,” Davis said. “Sometimes you’ve got to slow things down in order to play faster.”

It will be tough road for Reggie Davis, as he has plenty of competition heading into training camp, but all signs point to Davis making a great impression on his coaches in the early portion of the 2019 offseason.
