Cowboys roster move: Dallas releasing wide receiver Allen Hurns

Training camp will begin with one less wide receiver.

During the last victory that we saw from the Dallas Cowboys we also witnessed a gruesome injury. Wide receiver Allen Hurns went down early on and it immediately put his 2019 season into doubt.

By all accounts Hurns appears ready for this upcoming season from a physical perspective, but in the time since then the Cowboys have really re-shaped the wide receiver room as a whole. With the addition of Randall Cobb and handful of on-the-bubble players that are expected to flash at training camp, the Cedrick Wilsons and Noah Browns of the world, the Cowboys have clearly decided that they don’t need to be in Oxnard with one more tough roster decision to figure out.

On Tuesday it was announced that they are releasing Hurns. The move saves the Cowboys about $5M. Could that mean that this money will be used elsewhere?

Hurns was one year in to a two-year contract that he signed with Dallas last offseason. At the time of his signing many wondered how he would operate in an offense opposite of Dez Bryant, but we never got to see that as Dallas released Dez shortly after.

That would have theoretically given Allen some room to shine as the top receiver on the team, but ultimately that just didn’t happen over the first half of the season. Dallas wound up trading for Amari Cooper and that helped Michael Gallup make a leap over the second half of it all, the unfortunate reality of football is that the business of it sometimes leaves you on the outside looking in.

It’s certainly unfortunate that Allen won’t make it to camp with the Cowboys, but at the very least he now has more time to latch on with a new NFL team. The Cowboys clearly care for him, Jason Garrett’s moment with him upon his injury was very powerful, this just had to happen.

Thanks for the year of service, Allen Hurns. All the best moving forward.
