ESPN’s 53-man roster prediction for the Cowboys features an UDFA you’ll be happy about

It’s 53-man roster prediction season! A shot at a Cowboys roster.

Late July means we are rich in a few things:

  • Summer heat
  • Big Brother episodes
  • 53-man roster predictions

BTB’s own Tom Ryle discussed the “starting” 53 on Tuesday and this is only the beginning of all the talk. The shape of the Cowboys roster is going to fluctuate over the next few weeks as training camp and preseason gives us more data to glean over, we’ve waited all offseason for this.

The worldwide leader also put out a 53-man roster prediction as camp is about to begin. Todd Archer is one of the most in-the-know reporters when it comes to America’s Team so what he says is absolutely worth paying attention to.

Here are three big takeaways from it. You can see the full roster here.

Only one backup quarterback... and it’s not Mike White

Dak Prescott is the most-tenured quarterback on the Cowboys roster and that’s because he’s entering his fourth season in the NFL. The group is very young, obviously.

Behind Dak lies third-year man Cooper Rush and finally-not-a-rookie Mike White. Given that the latter was actually a draft pick of the Cowboys and is under contract for longer you’d think he has the leg up on the former, but this roster prediction has Rush in over White.

It’s tough to imagine the Cowboys parting ways with Mike White given that they drafted him so recently, but that’s why roster decisions are so tough. White was also a draft pick made with Kellen Moore as quarterbacks coach, with Moore at offensive coordinator now you’d imagine that would have to mean something.

Taco Charlton could be “on the roster bubble”

Look, I get that Taco Charlton has fallen short (well short) of expectations since being drafted in the first round two years ago, but there isn’t a lot of business sense to moving on from him at this point in my opinion.

At this point Charlton is worth holding on to for at the very least the duration of his rookie contract, we’re halfway there as it is. Interestingly though, Archer notes that Randy Gregory potentially being reinstated could put Charlton “on the bubble” which ultimately does make sense given the depth across the defensive line.

This is a big training camp for Charlton. That much is indisputable.

There’s an undrafted free agent!

Prepare yourself to fall in love with an UDFA wide receiver, it happens every year; however, that’s not the UDFA that Archer has making the roster. He has one that you might have forgotten about.

Dallas landed Mitch Hyatt out of Clemson which is an incredible thing to think about given the depth of their offensive line. Hyatt could have probably gone to a lot of places but still chose a spot with a lot of competition.

Some of this might be about looking ahead for the Cowboys. While the priority in the here and now is obviously the 2019 season, it’s hard to forget that this team could be without La’el Collins next year. The bread and butter of this squad is the offensive line, keeping dudes that are very good there makes a lot of sense.

Mitch Hyatt. Get hyped.
