The Dallas Cowboys will play a football game on Saturday for the first time in over 200 days. It’s just preseason, but dude, IT’S FOOTBALL.
We’ve waited an awfully long time to watch the ‘boys in silver and blue play 60 minutes worth of football and at long last we will finally get our wish. Their opponent on Saturday night is an old and bitter rival, so while it’s preseason, getting the win is always great especially against the San Francisco 49ers.
A lot has changed with San Fran over the last few years. They have a new, young quarterback who’s really hardly played since being traded there just under two years ago. Kyle Shanahan has been in charge for a while now (with John Lynch as general manager of course), but the duo hasn’t really paid off for the bay area yet.
Who are some 49ers players that you should be on the lookout for tonight? Obviously our primary interest is the Cowboys, but it’s worth knowing who the best players from San Francisco are and which ones are impressing. Niners Nation’s own Kyle Posey was kind enough to give us a little preview on where you should be looking.
The 49ers have some really good competition developing at a few spots, namely wide receiver. Kendrick Bourne has been a Kyle Shanahan favorite during training camp. Richie James made a name for himself during the first week but quieted down significantly this past week. Those are two wideouts likely battling for the final roster spot at wide receiver.
Shawn Poindexter is a tall, gangly wideout that can run and might be the player that fans fall in love with this preseason. The same can be said at cornerback for the Niners. DJ Reed, Emmanuel Moseley, and Greg Mabin are all fighting to make a name for themselves during preseason. I’d say those six are players that should have their name called quite a bit on Saturday.
While some of these players are near the bottom of San Francisco’s roster for now, there are obviously guys who their fans believe in strongly. Kyle also chimed in on certain 49ers that he would be shocked to see limited by the Cowboys. So take it as an extremely positive thing if Dallas limits them.
It has to be Deebo Samuel or Jalen Hurd, the 49ers Day 2 picks at wide receiver. Both are coming along as they are still getting comfortable with the playbook and their responsibilities, but they flashed the big-play ability enough to make you think they should dominate the 2’s and 3’s during the preseason. On defense, the same can be said for Dre Greenlaw. He’s started off practice making a play every day this week. Greenlaw should play early and often and stuff the stat sheet.
Football is just about here. We’ve waited long enough.
