The Dallas Cowboys are one week into their season but there are some questions with the state of their practice squad. What questions? Well, it’s hard to know.
On Tuesday, the Cowboys released running back Jordan Chunn from the 53-man roster. Shortly after Jason Garrett’s presser today, it was reported that the team signed Darius Jackson, who’s bounced to and from the Cowboys recently, to their practice squad. There was thought to be an open roster spot on the practice squad because it had previously been reported that Chris Covington would be promoted to the 53-man roster.
It was after that when things got confusing
Prior to lunch time on Wednesday it seemed like Chris Covington would take Jordan Chunn’s spot and that Darius Jackson was then going to take Covington’s. That’s simple enough; however, Jason Garrett also announced on Wednesday that wide receiver Tavon Austin won’t practice today due to concussion symptoms that really came on after the team’s win on Sunday against the New York Giants.
This apparently shifts everything that the Cowboys were planning on doing, or it might shift it at least. Per ESPN’s Todd Archer, Austin’s injury could force the Cowboys to instead call up Cedrick Wilson from the practice squad instead of Chris Covington, giving them another receiver so that they stay with five.
The Cowboys’ plan to call up linebacker Chris Covington from the practice squad could be altered because of the concussion-like symptoms receiver Tavon Austin is battling. Austin was able to go through the Monday workout but reported symptoms on Tuesday and will not practice Wednesday. If he is unable to play Sunday against Washington, then the Cowboys could look to call up receiver Cedrick Wilson from the practice squad instead.
It appeared the team was waiting to see what’s happening with Austin and if it’s going to cause him to miss time they’ll call up Wilson, if not they’ll call up Covington. Unless they already did!
Cowboys officially have promoted LB Chris Covington to 53-man roster from practice squad.

With Covington on the roster it sorts out the math of it all. As of midday on Wednesday:
- Chris Covington is on the roster
- Darius Jackson is on the practice squad
- Jordan Chunn is out
- Tavon Austin is hurt
- Cedrick Wilson could be promoted to the roster (with Covington likely going down) if and when the Cowboys need a receiver this week due to the status of Austin
Got it? Good.
