For the past couple of years the Dallas Cowboys have seen their secondary coached by Kris Richard.
This experiment went beautifully in 2018. Byron Jones was a star during his first full season at cornerback and many people thought that it was only a matter of time until Kris Richard became full-time defensive coordinator and someday maybe even head coach. While he did interview with the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants after the 2018 and 2019 seasons, respectively, ultimately that didn’t materialize and a down 2019 season left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.
There had previously been a report that the Cowboys were open to retaining Richard under new head coach Mike McCarthy. Ultimately anything is possible so that can’t technically be ruled out but considering that the Cowboys reportedly have a new secondary coach it appears as if they are fully moving on. Say hello to Texas A&M’s Maurice Linguist.

Speaking personally, I’m an Aggie and our football program has been, well, at least we won the 7OT game a year ago. Honestly though Maurice is an interesting option especially for another Aggie in safety Donovan Wilson whom the Cowboys drafted just a year ago.
Linguist has a variety of coaching experience at the collegiate level and appears to be the first coach from those ranks that the Cowboys have expressed an interest in besides Stan Drayton. Here is Linguist’s coaching history.
Coaching Experience
2007, Baylor (Graduate Assistant / Safeties)
2008, Valdosta State (Defensive Backs / Special Teams)
2009-11, James Madison (Safeties)
2012, Buffalo (Defensive Backs)
2013, Buffalo (Defensive Backs / Defensive Passing Game Coordinator)
2014, Iowa State (Defensive Backs)
2015, Iowa State (Defensive Backs / Defensive Passing Game Coordinator)
2016, Mississippi State (Safeties)
2017, Minnesota (Defensive Backs)
2018-19, Texas A&M (Cornerbacks)
As mentioned there is familiarity for Donovan Wilson with Linguist and we’ll see if the Cowboys manage to target any more Aggies in the draft. Debione Renfro has already declared and the Cowboys could certainly use cornerback help, but that’s just one option in connecting a few dots. Linguist also coached Antoine Winfield Jr. while at Minnesota who many people are high on.
Here are some older videos of Linguist coaching to give you an idea of who he is.
