There is no question that the Cowboys secondary needs help.

Tuesday morning marked the official beginning of the offseason for every team in the college football universe. LSU put together one of the greatest seasons that we have ever seen, especially Joe Burrow’s, and the SEC is on top once again.

While we have now begun the trek through the offseason desert in college football, the NFL season still has three games left. The Cowboys won’t be taking part in them so their focus is specifically on college players as they are preparing for the 2020 NFL Draft.

There are officially 100 days separating us from the day that the Cowboys will, barring any sort of change, take someone in the first round for the first time in two years. Dallas holds the 17th overall pick and the latest mock draft from SB Nation has them using it on a star secondary player from an SEC powerhouse that happens to wear number seven...

17. Dallas Cowboys: Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama

What happens to free agent defensive back Byron Jones will define what the Cowboys do in the draft. If he leaves, the Cowboys could find another big cornerback in Diggs.

LSU’s Grant Delpit also meets the qualifications as outlined above and it’s definitely possible that the Cowboys take the star safety if he falls to them. Still, though, it would hardly be a consolation prize to end up with Trevon Diggs as he’s one of the best cornerbacks in this draft class.

For what it’s worth, Delpit is who The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has the Cowboys taking in his latest mock so the thought in mid-January appears to be that the Cowboys will be addressing their secondary with their most valuable pick.

Diggs saw his 2018 season end early with a broken foot but rebounded nicely last season and is going to be regarded highly by draft minds. Obviously what Dallas does with Byron Jones in free agency is going to drastically influence how they approach the cornerback position.

What do you think about adding Diggs?
