Poll: Does the Packers NFC Championship Game loss make you feel better about Mike McCarthy?

McCarthy’s old team had a rough night on Sunday.

Super Bowl LIV is set and in less than two weeks we’ll all be treated to what should be a great game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. Both teams earned their tickets to Miami on Sunday. Kansas City took down a fun Tennessee Titans team and the 49ers blew out the Green Bay Packers. While none of these teams have anything to do with the Dallas Cowboys (the Cowboys didn’t even make the playoffs) one of them has an association to their new head coach.

Mike McCarthy is running the Cowboys now and prior to the year away from the game that he had this past season, he coached the Packers for over a decade. McCarthy and the Packers won a Super Bowl together, but the way that things ended weren’t so great.

Not even a year ago, in the offseason that followed Super Bowl LIII, there was a lot said about the dissolution of McCarthy’s relationship with his quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. Packers fans flocked to blame him for the team’s missteps and inability to win an NFC Championship Game after they won it all (they lost the two they appeared in post-Super Bowl) yet they lost the most recent title game with McCarthy having nothing to do with them.

There’s no need to be silly here. The Packers made it to the NFC Championship Game after all, so they hardly fell apart without Mike McCarthy. But their most recent title game appearance went a lot like the last one before it when Green Bay got blown out by the Atlanta Falcons. Interestingly Kyle Shanahan was on the opposite side of the field (as the Falcons offensive coordinator and then the 49ers head coach), but does that at all absolve Mike McCarthy of blame? Does it mean Shanahan is just that good? There are a lot of questions.

Considering the Cowboys have their hopes and dreams tied to Mike McCarthy for the foreseeable future, the temperature surrounding him is important. Does the fact that Green Bay is still unable (“still” in one year) to get past the point that he couldn’t with them even after he’s gone make you more confident than you were that he is in fact a legitimate option for the Cowboys?
