One of the most-agreed upon things when it comes to the 2020 Dallas Cowboys is that they need to improve in the safety department. This was also true of the 2010-2019 Dallas Cowboys as well.
People have been championing the cause for Dallas to invest legitimate resources into the safety position for years. While they have declined to do so in the draft, there was thought that maybe they would marry the player they flirted with forever in Earl Thomas during last year’s free agency, but that didn’t materialize and here we are, same old same old.
With a new regime in place, it’s possible that things change for the Cowboys. Mike McCarthy was part of a Green Bay Packers team that took safeties in consecutive first rounds (Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Damarious Randall in 2014 and 2015, respectively), but obviously he didn’t run personnel there. If the Cowboys do want to go safety in the first round there are a number of options, well, really only two.
Grant Delpit is the hot name, but Xavier McKinney is challenging as the best in the class
While LSU safety Grand Delpit has been mocked over and over to the Cowboys by a number of outlets, it’s worth mentioning that there is another legitimate safety that should go in the first round in a few months.
Alabama’s Xavier McKinney is also a name to know (the SEC is crazy... it just means more) and while he might not be being touted as often as recent National Champion Delpit, he has been mocked to the Cowboys.
NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah is certainly someone who’s opinion is credible when it comes to the NFL Draft. Not only did he mock Xavier McKinney to the Cowboys, he called McKinney the best safety in the class.
17 Xavier McKinney - S
School: Alabama | Year: Junior
McKinney is the best safety in the draft, and he addresses a glaring need for the Cowboys.
Jeremiah mocked Delpit a few picks later to the New England Patriots so it’s not like he has him graded poorly. These two are going to be compared to each other a lot over the next few months and if the Cowboys do have the opportunity to choose between them they’re going to have to make sure they’ve done their homework.
A lot tends to change with regards to the draft between January and April, so it’s possible that if you’re higher on Delpit/McKinney now that you feel the opposite in about 90 days. For now, what would you say if the Cowboys passed on Delpit in favor of McKinney?
