As the new head coach of the Dallas cowboys, Mike McCarthy’s first job is to get his assistant coaches worked out. It’s already been reported that Mike Nolan will be the new defensive coordinator. There is also a report that McCarthy would like to keep Kellen Moore as the offensive coordinator but that there is competition from the University of Washington for his services.
Now we can add a new name to the list of potential coaches, and that’s Jim Tomsula.
As Mike McCarthy works to build out his #Cowboys staff, another familiar name that’s being targeted is Jim Tomsula, per sources. Respected D-line coach (and onetime #49ers coach) would take over a talented group in Dallas.

Tomsula has the been the defensive line coach for Washington for the last few years. Tomsula was the head coach in San Francisco for the 2015 season when he went 5-11. He would be the third coach with head coaching experience on staff if he got hired as both McCarthy and Nolan have also been head coaches.
Tomsula has had some success in Washington and is generally considered the best position coach over there, especially on defense.
An article previous to the 2019 season had this to say:
Redskins fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief. After some speculation that Jim Tomsula wouldn’t return as the team’s defensive line coach, he is now officially confirmed to return in 2019.
Tomsula was the team’s best position coach last year and has gotten a lot out of the defensive line in his two-year tenure with the Redskins. Needless to say, keeping him is a great move.
And one just recently also gives praise to Tomsula:
Everyone on the defensive staff should not return. Sorry. That’s Greg Manusky, Jim Tomsula, Rob Ryan and Ray Horton.
Each of them have some good qualities, but Tomsula is the best out of that group. He wasn’t coming back without Greg Manusky..
He was another coach that wanted out last year, per sources, but chose to come back ONLY after the Redskins brought back Manusky.
The Redskins defensive line is one of the best things about their team, and it would be great to bring that coaching to Dallas. The results speak for themselves...
Tomsula has been w/ WAS for the past 3 yrs as their DL coach. WAS has averaged about 45 sacks per season in that span and have been in the top 10 in sacks each of those seasons. Meanwhile, Dallas hasn't ranked higher than 15th in the past 3 yrs, nor have they reached 40 sacks. https://t.co/x9HlGS5bhr
