The Dallas Cowboys game against the Seattle Seahawks was just another contest that highlighted the defensive miscues that we’ve seen all three weeks of this early season. Whether it’s linebackers failing to drop deep enough into coverage, cornerbacks thinking that they are playing a zone defense when it’s actually man coverage, or safeties that are supposed to be playing high and instead are cheating down allowing receivers to get behind them and score touchdowns - the Cowboys have done it all.
Every week it seems like some issue that the Cowboys had on defense the week prior is fixed, but then new issues emerge to disrupt the Cowboys defensive strategy for the game. Maybe it’s time for the Cowboys to get some help in that secondary because right now the combination of Xavier Woods and Darian Thompson isn’t working. They continue to get caught peeking at quarterbacks and giving opposing offenses easy shots down the field. An with the defensive line dealing with an injury to pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence, he’s playing on a bum knee, it might be time to put someone back there that scares offenses.
Someone like Earl Thomas or a Tony Jefferson perhaps? Either way the Cowboys need to fix this issue quickly.
There are a few different ways you can look at the problems on defense, especially in the secondary. Mike Nolan and the defensive coaches might have overplayed their hand with a new scheme and no real offseason to install it. Or it might be the youth of Trevon Diggs, and inexperience of guys like Darian Thompson hampering things. Or maybe it just they flat-out don’t have enough talent.
