Report: Cowboys leaning towards Garrett Gilbert as starting quarterback over Cooper Rush for Week 9

There will be no Ben DiNucci this week.

Things have gone from bad, to worse, to downright unprecedented, for the Dallas Cowboys at the most important position in the game of professional football. To be frank, the situation is dire.

It was just four weeks ago that Dak Prescott was lost for the season against the New York Giants. Two weeks later the Cowboys lost his backup Andy Dalton to a concussion which forced them to start rookie Ben DiNucci in Philadelphia last week.

Conventional wisdom seemed to suggest that the Cowboys knew DiNucci wasn’t ready for the NFL, Jerry Jones literally said this on Tuesday morning himself on 105.3 The Fan, which meant that they had to have been happy to have Dalton back assuming he was healthy enough to return.

Unfortunately a different matter will keep Dalton away from the Cowboys as they placed him on the Reserve/Covid-19 list on Tuesday. This leaves the Cowboys with a few options, again, at the all-important position of quarterback, and it seems like they are leaning in one particular direction.

The Cowboys are reportedly leaning towards starting Garrett Gilbert at quarterback

Shortly after Dak Prescott went down after Week 4 the Dallas Cowboys poached a quarterback off of the Cleveland Browns practice squad in Garrett Gilbert. They chose to roll with DiNucci over Gilbert last week in Philadelphia, but given the status of Dalton they will have to choose between them yet again and it seems like they have a preference. Dallas is reportedly leaning in Gilbert’s direction.

The Cowboys do have a third option at quarterback in Cooper Rush who they recently signed to the practice squad. Rush has familiarity, certainly more than anyone else, in Kellen Moore’s offense, but it’s not like that is going to be some massive tiebreaker at this point.

Garrett Gilbert was a big-time player in the briefly-lived Alliance of American Football so he has done it at a level that is at least relatively close to the NFL before.

It’s going to be quite the week.
