It wasn’t supposed to be like this. In the immediate view, the Cowboys and the 49ers were supposed to play on Sunday night, but they were infamously flexed out of that primetime spot. In the overall view, both these teams were supposed to be NFC contenders and this Week 15 matchup was supposed to be a big measuring stick for each team as they were headed to the playoffs. That obviously isn’t happening.
So today, in the 1 PM ET slot of NFL games, a disappointing Cowboys team will take on a disappointing 49ers team as both try to keep slim playoff hopes alive. Both teams have been among the most injured in the NFL and both are operating without their starting quarterbacks and a host of other star players. Maybe this should be the Battle of the Backups.
The Cowboys are getting some good news as most of their secondary will return to action today making the defense the strongest it has been in a while. It will be up to Andy Dalton and the offensive line to engineer some scoring drives to try and best a 49ers running attack that will surely give the Dallas defense problems.
