As we trudge through this Cowboys 2020 season, unsure if we should just be giving up or if we should push for an NFC East crown, there has been a bright spot. The Cowboys rookie class has the makings of something special.
CeeDee Lamb is the unquestioned star of the class and he is on his way to a fantastic rookie year. He has 53 catches for 650 yards with four touchdowns. We all imagine what those numbers would have looked like had Dak Prescott been healthy all year. Neville Gallimore, the Cowboys third-round pick in 2020, has started to come on as he’s seen more snaps after the Cowboys let go of Dontari Poe.
Two other draft picks from the 2020 class where on their way to promising years until injury struck. Second-round pick Trevon Diggs and fourth-round pick Tyler Biadasz had received significant playing time. Diggs had been a starter at corner all year and Biadasz took over the center position once Joe Looney sat out with injury. Both looked like they were going to be starters for years to come.
Unfortunately, they succumbed to the injury bug. But, the Cowboys hope to see them back on the field before the season ends. There are five more games to go, and Jerry Jones said he hopes both players will participate in some of them.
Asked Friday morning about the possibility of Tyler Biadasz and Trevon Diggs returning to the field this season, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said he was optimistic.
“There’s a chance we could have them back, and we want them back,” he told 105.3 FM The Fan.
Both rookies worked their way into the starting lineup in 2020, and made the most of those opportunities before injury struck in Week 9. Biadasz strained his hamstring during warmups before kickoff against Pittsburgh, while Diggs broke a bone in his foot during the fourth quarter of that 24-19 loss.
If either player can return before the end of the season, it sounds like the Cowboys would prefer as many reps as possible.
“There’s no reason not to put them out there the minute they can play, because we got the entire offseason ahead of us,” Jones said.
The return of Diggs would actually be somewhat of a surprise since it was king of assumed his season was over when he broke his foot. But Stephen Jones says he might play sometime this month.
The second-round pick suffered a broken foot on Nov. 8 against Pittsburgh. Diggs has missed the last two games but Cowboys VP Stephen Jones said there’s a chance he can get back on the field at some point this month.
“I think he’s got a great opportunity,” Jones said of Diggs. “I’ve seen him do some work this week. He’s out of his boot. He’s a competitive guy and I think he’s going to be a great one for us. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he gets back a little sooner than we thought.”
Getting those guys back and working again would do more for their development as they head into the offseason and on to their sophomore campaigns. If Lamb, Diggs, Gallimore and Biadasz can claim stating spots going forward, or at least be part of a rotation in Gallimore’s case, that is a big win for the Cowboys draft process.
