BTB Community Mock Draft Pick #3

Today, the Detroit Lions are on the clock and Krotto07 has the pick.

With the third pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions Select: Chase Young, DE, Ohio State.

Krotto07's Take:

The Detroit Lions will go into the draft looking for defensive help for one of the worst defenses in football, likely looking to get the best corner prospect in the draft Jeff Okudah to help a struggling secondary. However, with the selection of two QB's to start the draft and surprisingly their highest graded prospect in the whole draft still on the board, Matt Patricia and the Lions find the pairing of Trey Flowers and Chase Young too tantalizing to pass up. A defense that was terrible against the pass in 2019 now has the makings of a pretty stout pass rush.

Pride of Detroit Mock Draft Roundup

A roundup of recent draft mocks has the Lions trading down with the Dolphins for a variety of players. However, Young's teammate CB Jeff Okudah seems to be the Lions pick in most of the drafts.

Forget the Dolphins, Tua Tagovailoa is a Lion?

Also, their PODcast discusses rumors between Tua Tagovailoa and Matt Stafford. Personally the thinking is that Tua could be the third overall pick and sit for 2020 which would allow his hip to heal even more. This makes sense because the Lions can't cut Matthew Stafford until 2021 at the earliest.

The numbers from SBNation's Ohio State Buckeyes Blog:

The biggest game changer on either team is Ohio State defensive end Chase Young. The Heisman Trophy finalist led the country and set an Ohio State single-season record by notching 16.5 sacks this year in just 11 games (Missed two due to suspension for NCAA violations). The junior not only became the first defensive player to win the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Football Award, but he also won the Bednarik and Nagurski Awards.

From The Draft Network:

BEST TRAIT - Pass Rush

WORST TRAIT - Pad Level

RED FLAGS - None

NFL COMP - Jevon Kearse

Chase Young is a rare defensive prospect with an elite overall skill set. Projecting most favorably to a role at the next level as a 4-3 defensive end, Young is without limitations and any minor concerns about his projection to the next level are minor. Young profiles as an instant impact edge defender with the upside to become one the NFLs most prolific defensive playmakers. He’s polished, powerful, athletic and features every desirable physical trait needed to excel in the NFL. Young is a top of the first round talent in any draft.
