The state of the kicker position has been one of uncertainty (being kind) for the Dallas Cowboys over the last year. It was less than two years ago that America’s Team made the then-shocking decision to cut ties with Dan Bailey and for a season it seemed like they found their kicker of the future in Brett Maher. That honeymoon did not last very long.
Maher struggled during his second season with the Cowboys and, to the frustration of many fans, the team held on to him for far too long last season. Eventually Dallas moved on from Maher and brought in Kai Forbath. He responded by going 10 for 10 on both field goals and extra points in three games.
Dallas is reportedly interested in bringing Kai Forbath back... or going with an old friend of John Fassel’s
It would certainly make sense for the Cowboys to bring back Kai Forbath for a full season considering the way that last season ended. He is only 32 years old, and according to The Dallas Morning News, the team expressed interest in this idea on Monday.
Cowboys expressed interest today in re-signing kicker Kai Forbath, source said. He was 10-for-10 in field goals during a three-game stint to end the 2019 season. Chance of a return, but Greg Zuerlein is on radar, too. He and John Fassel could reunite in Dallas at right price.

The sample size for Forbath as a Cowboy is very small as mentioned, three games isn’t a lot to go off of. Still, going 10 for 10 on both field goals and extra points was a welcome sign especially after what the team had seen from Brett Maher.
If you’re into videos of kickers making kicks, then Kai Forbath is definitely here for you. This past weekend he posted a video of himself working out at UCLA. Based off of this video alone he is the greatest kicker of all time.

Whether the Cowboys want to go with Kai Forbath again is likely largely up to new head coach Mike McCarthy. It was Jason Garrett’s Cowboys that brought Forbath in to begin with, it is unknown whether or not McCarthy feels the same.
Greg Zuerlein is an option and one that John Fassel knows well
Speaking of Mike McCarthy he has a new special teams coordinator in place for the Cowboys - John Fassel.
Fassel spent a lot of time with the Los Angeles Rams, he even served as their interim head coach at one point in 2016 after they fired Jeff Fisher, and while there he worked with some very good specialists. One of them was kicker Greg Zuerlein.
We speculated that Zuerlein could be an option for the Cowboys back when the Fassel hire was first made, and it seems to have legitimate life. For what it’s worth, he has struggled a bit in the accuracy department as of late.
