Through Wednesday of the second week of free agency, the Dallas Cowboys added five external free agents. Honestly that’s probably more than most were expecting.
The Cowboys have been notoriously shy in recent memory when it comes to throwing around a lot of cash on the open market. They prefer to build through the draft and only really pay for things that they believe they truly need. Generally this doesn’t tend to be much which leads to some stagnancy.
So far the Cowboys have spent mostly on defense. They have brought in what look to be three (potentially) starters and help elsewhere. Considering the potential starters that they’ve agreed to terms with are at defensive tackle and safety it is possible that you are sleeping just a little bit more easy concerning how this team will fare in 2020.
Gerald McCoy undoubtedly headlines the Cowboys free agency class, a point that many BTBers agree with, but there is also some cautious hype around Ha Ha Clinton-Dix given how many people loved him entering the 2014 NFL Draft. With Dontari Poe agreeing to terms on Wednesday there is an interesting level of what feels like security inside the defensive line, and that’s not a place that we’re all used to being.
The Cowboys still have a few needs with less than a month until the draft and they’ll theoretically look to fulfill them there. Clinton-Dix is a nice option, but there should still be a heavy focus on drafting a safety. Dallas has yet to bring in a wide receiver in free agency to replace the loss of Randall Cobb, but it is possible they could find that option over the last weekend in April.
SB Nation’s FanPulse data shows that Cowboys fans are trending in an upward direction as far as confidence in the team is concerned. There was a natural influx of confidence when the team hired a new head coach since people wanted to see any sort of change, but it feels like people are indeed buying what Mike McCarthy is selling.
