The 2020 NFL Draft officially begins today and we are all very excited about it. This is a huge step forward for the Cowboys and it will go a long way towards their 2020 efforts. How the team fares over the course of the next three days, to be quite frank, is critically important.
Of course, it all starts with how they perform in the first round and with the 17th overall pick. Where the Cowboys are going to go in the first round is anyone’s guess at this point, but that hasn’t stopped anybody from taking a stab at it.
Daniel Jeremiah has the Cowboys going CJ Henderson in his final mock
Mock drafts for the first round will officially be on their annual hiatus when this day is over and that means that the final ones are starting to trickle out. NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah revealed his final mock and in it he has the Cowboys landing someone that many would be pleased about.
Cowboys fans seem to have made peace with the fact that the team’s first-round pick will come from a certain handful of players. Jeremiah is toying with that idea as he has Dallas landing Florida CB C.J. Henderson.
17: CJ Henderson - CB
School: Florida | Year: Junior
Henderson could end up going in the top 10 on Thursday night. He is an outstanding cover man, but his tackling is a concern.
As noted, it is likely that Henderson is gone long before the Cowboys are even on your television’s bottom ticker in terms of upcoming picks. His value has risen over the course of the last few weeks so it feels like the chances of Dallas getting him are slim.
Obviously the Cowboys lost Byron Jones in free agency so cornerback is a need. If they managed to walk away from tonight with C.J. Henderson then there will likely be a lot of happy BTBers.
Mel Kiper has the Cowboys addressing the secondary with Xavier McKinney
ESPN’s Mel Kiper also released his final mock draft on Thursday, and like Jeremiah, has the Cowboys getting help for their secondary. This makes sense given that Dallas needs help all over it.
Kiper has C.J. Henderson going 12th overall to the Las Vegas Raiders, which means that he wouldn’t be available for the Cowboys. As a result, Kiper has America’s Team going with Alabama’s Xavier McKinney.
17. Dallas Cowboys
Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama | Highlights
The Cowboys’ secondary has been depleted this offseason, and McKinney is the best pure safety in this draft. If one of the top wide receivers falls to No. 17, could Dallas pass?
McKinney (or LSU’s Grant Delpit) would be a fine selection for the Cowboys as, again, safety is a huge need. While many may drastically prefer C.J. Henderson, it would still be nice to see Dallas address a spot of need with a very good player.
There are, of course, a number of other directions that the Cowboys can go with their first round pick. This is what two experts have them doing. Do you agree?
