Cornerback became an even larger need for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason when Byron Jones left for the Miami Dolphins in free agency, and as a result we saw the team draft two corners last weekend. Trevon Diggs and Reggie Robinson II give the Cowboys more depth and options at cornerback, but the reality is that the team is still in need of help at safety. Dallas signed Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in free agency, but that is the only addition to date.
Reggie Robinson II does have some safety flexibility, but it is worth noting that in the team’s post-draft press conference Mike McCarthy hinted that the Cowboys could move a veteran cornerback to safety. It seems like that idea is picking up serious steam.
The Cowboys are reportedly “seriously exploring” moving Chidobe Awuzie to safety
When McCarthy said what he did, many people assumed that he was talking about Chidobe Awuzie. There has been word about Chido moving to safety for about two years now, and according to the Dallas Morning News, now might actually be the time that it happens.
Chidobe Awuzie played both cornerback and safety in college at Colorado.
Next season, the Cowboys likely will tap into that versatility.
The team is seriously exploring a position switch that would move the 2017 second-round pick from cornerback to safety, two people familiar with the situation said this week. One person indicated that any determination won’t be formalized until the Cowboys’ coaching staff can share a field with players and properly evaluate a young cornerback group. Jaylon Smith also could change linebacker spots, but that is still to be determined.
Recent roster activity suggests a switch to safety for Awuzie is all but decided.
Awuzie, like Jourdan Lewis and safety Xavier Woods, is entering a contract year so it is a little interesting to move him now, but that is ultimately up to the Cowboys.
Dallas brought in free agent cornerback Daryl Worley on Tuesday night, so if they do move Awuzie out of the cornerback room they still have plenty of options at the position.
Dallas Cowboys Cornerbacks (not counting Chidobe Awuzie)
- Jourdan Lewis
- Anthony Brown
- CJ Goodwin
- Maurice Canady
- Saivion Smith
- Trevon Diggs
- Reggie Robinson II
- Daryl Worley
It is possible that the Cowboys were willing to take a safety if the right value had fallen to them at a certain point in the draft, but that did not come to fruition. Overall adding two cornerbacks might have been the best possible net result if they have been wanting to slide Awuzie over for some time.
