Optimism surrounding the Dallas Cowboys is certainly at one of the highest levels in recent history. People are hyped for a number of reasons. There have been big changes to the organization over the last few months, most notably at head coach, and the tangible adjustments that we have seen them make in terms of roster construction are ones that have been wanted by many for so long.
While the Cowboys finished 8-8 and out of the playoffs last season, there were still many that saw the year end thinking that they were still the best team in their division. There is no doubt that they underachieved in 2019, so with important factors altered, it makes sense that they could see significant improvement in 2020.
Most Cowboys fans think the team is going to win between 11 and 13 games
For some time now we have been using a tool across SB Nation called FanPulse to track the pulse of different fan bases. The tool has been re-branded and is now known as Reacts.
The concept is the same. Cowboys fans are polled for their opinion on various things and with optimism dancing everywhere it seemed appropriate to check in and find out exactly how confident Cowboys fans are.
When asked how many wins people thought the Cowboys would have in 2020, the largest percentage of people responded with between 11 and 13. That is admittedly a lot of wins for a team to pile up.
Looking at the more conservative number here, 11, we can try and work backwards and figure out which games the Cowboys will lose. Assume that they’ll drop one or two in the division (division games are hard after all), and then you have room to lose three more. You can see losses for the Cowboys against teams like the Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, or Seattle Seahawks, given that those are solid squads. Football is also a weird sport where random things tend to happen and weird losses (plus weird wins) come along and surprise you.
Given that Dallas won eight games last season and that they should be improved in overall disposition, it is definitely possible to squeeze three more out and finish with 11 wins. That would surely be enough for the NFC East title and would see them playing in the postseason.
