Poll: Should the Cowboys leave Chidobe Awuzie at cornerback or move him to safety?

Let’s discuss.

There is no shortage of optimism when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys offense, adding CeeDee Lamb to one of the most explosive groups across the NFL has that sort of effect. People are expecting big things from the Cowboys when they have the ball this season.

What about when Dallas is on defense, though? The Cowboys lost big-time contributors in Byron Jones and Robert Quinn and that likely means that they will take some sort of step back. Quinn was incredible in the sack department but the Cowboys did draft Bradlee Anae after adding Aldon Smith and (hopefully) a returning Randy Gregory.

The secondary is a bit of a different matter, though. Jones was a favorite of many analytically-thinking minds, and as a result of his departure for Miami, it is fair to say that as a whole the Cowboys secondary could disappoint (Gil Brandt is not high on them). New faces like Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Trevon Diggs, and Reggie Robinson II are worth getting excited about, but what about the returning players? Some will have critical roles.

Where should the Cowboys play Chidobe Awuzie in 2020?

It is worth mentioning that the Cowboys did bring Anthony Brown back in free agency and now have him as one of three serious veteran options at cornerback. 2017 draftees Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis are both entering contract years and are going to have a lot expected of them.

People have been screaming for Lewis to play more for several seasons now, but Awuzie has never had an issue when it comes to seeing playing time. He has been an alright cornerback by some measurements, but the expectation has been high and with him getting so many balls thrown at him due to Byron Jones on the other side, situations have made it feel like he has not lived up to a certain level of hype.

There is some thought that the Cowboys might be moving Awuzie from cornerback to safety in 2020 and that would create at the very least an interesting conversation. With an expected starter at cornerback sliding over who would then take his spot? Additionally, what would happen to the presumed starting safeties in Clinton-Dix and Xavier Woods?

Dallas did more this offseason period at cornerback than retaining Anthony Brown. They added both Maurice Canady and Darly Worley, but that is hardly an elite level of insurance. Our own Danny Phantom has spoken this offseason here at BTB about how relying on them might not be the best idea.

If anyone is banking on low-cost free agents Daryl Worley or Maurice Canady to hold down the starting outside corner job, that seems rather optimistic as it wouldn’t be all that surprising if neither of these guys made the final roster when it is all said and done.

Not only would moving Awuzie leave them light at corner, but right now - the starting safety spots are occupiedo. With the addition of free agent Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, he and Xavier Woods should be able to handle the majority of the reps. Moving Awuzie would be removing a starter at corner, only to add depth at safety. That doesn’t seem like a good allocation of resources.

There are reasons to feel good about keeping Awuzie at corner. He’s gets a bad rep at times, but he’s a better corner than some give him credit for. When it comes to knocking down passes, few on the team are better. In fact, nobody.

Moving Chido from corner to safety is far more complicated than simply altering his spot on the depth chart. Such a move invites many other questions that the Cowboys might not have answers to. They might not even have the answer to whether or not Chido would make a safety worthy of putting up with all of the residual hassle.

If NFL training camps begin near their normal start time then we are just over a month away from seeing the Cowboys put together some of their 2020 plans on the football field at The Star in Frisco. When it comes time for that where do you want to see them line Chidobe Awuzie up? Why?
