So much for the idea... again... that Dak Prescott can’t throw the long ball.

At a basic level you can use normal counting numbers such as rushing yards, passing yards, completion percentage, and more as stats markers. However, thanks to the advanced work of sites such as PFF, Football Outsiders, and Sharp Football, we can find better statistics to help paint pictures of players as we evaluate them.

Pro Football Focus was a big fan of Dak Prescott’s performance in 2019 and graded him out in very positively. In their research, they found that the Cowboys franchised-tagged quarterback led the league in completions of 40+ yards in 2019.

For a quarterback often criticized for his inability to push the ball down the field, this is a stat that will leave some scratching their heads. Yes, Cowboys Nation, Rayne Dakota Prescott completed more 40+ yard passes down the field in 2019 than the league’s MVP, Patrick Mahomes. Now, this stat only tells us so much, but it does suggest that Dak Prescott has improved on his accuracy down the field, and shouldn’t be considered a “dink and dunk” quarterback.

With the addition of CeeDee Lamb, it’s likely that these numbers could see a jump in 2020. With another big-play receiver added to the bunch, it will take pressure off of Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup. While the WR4 position is still up in the air, an added speed-threat could also help with the Cowboys down the field passing potential in the upcoming season.
