If you have been paying attention to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, it is easy to be excited about the passing offense for this upcoming season. Quarterback Dak Prescott took his game to another level throwing the football last season, while both Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving during their first full year together.
Throw in the Cowboys hiring quarterback guru Mike McCarthy as head coach, retaining bright offensive mind Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator, and drafting former Oklahoma Sooners star wideout CeeDee Lamb gives even more reason to watching Dallas attack opposing secondaries this fall and winter.
The Travis Frederick retirement does leave a hole in the middle of the offensive line, while tight end Blake Jarwin is largely unproven thus far through his career, but there is enough talent on that side of the ball to pick up some of that slack. Expectations are that McCarthy and staff will be an upgrade over the Jason Garrett regime, as well.
Still, the success of the Dallas Cowboys offense will more than likely start and end with the quarterback.
Bleacher Report is predicting Dak Prescott to throw for the most yards in the league this upcoming season.
Quarterback play in the NFL is getting better and better at the top of the league. Patrick Mahomes is from a different planet in terms of QB play, while Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson, and Deshaun Watson have become must-see TV.
With that said, Prescott has proven to be among the best signal-callers in football for the majority of his professional career — backed up by an impressive 4,902-yard and 30-touchdown campaign as a fourth-year starter. Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton is predicting that the Cowboys’ franchise quarterback will have even better numbers in 2020.
Prescott will have Lamb, four-time Pro Bowler Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup—who racked up 1,107 yards in 2019—in three-wide receiver sets. ESPN’s Todd Archer suggested running back Tony Pollard also could see more action in the passing game.
“With Ezekiel Elliott on the roster, Pollard will not get a lot of work,” Archer wrote. “But he could be a multifaceted player in coach Mike McCarthy’s offense who could compare to Ty Montgomery. Montgomery was a receiver who moved to running back. Perhaps Pollard can do the reverse, as he played receiver at Memphis.”
With Elliott and Pollard both potentially active in the passing game, Prescott could rack up 5,000-plus yards through the air.
Prescott’s Projected Total: 5,070 passing yards
Moton cites the addition of rookie receiver CeeDee Lamb and Mike McCarthy’s offensive scheme as two reasons why Prescott will edge out the spectacular Mahomes in passing yardage during the upcoming football year.
Obviously, throwing for a ton of yards does not always lead to wins — as we found out last season during Prescott’s tremendous season — but it has to be exciting to know that Prescott has a legitimate chance to be among the league leaders in passing once again.
Regardless of what side of the Pay Dak fence you happen to sit on, the Mississippi State product has gotten better and better since coming into the league as compensatory fourth-round draft pick in 2016. Former quarterback coach Jon Kitna was a big factor in improving Prescott’s footwork and mechanics, and fortunately, the quarterback has continued to work with the former NFL signal-caller this offseason.
Prescott finished second in the category a season ago, but Bleacher Report is predicting Prescott to be at the top of the league in passing yards in 2020. Hopefully, with McCarthy and company, that leads to more victories this time around.
