Gerald McCoy statement on season-ending injury: I will remain the mentor I am to the young guys

All the best to Gerald McCoy.

NFL: Carolina Panthers-Minicamp Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Monday was a hard day for the Dallas Cowboys as the team lost defensive tackle Gerald McCoy for the season with a ruptured right quad tendon. McCoy figured to be a big part of what Mike Nolan’s defensive line was going to do this season. He is not someone that has missed a lot of time to this point in his career, Monday seems like it was just an unfortunate accident.

Time will tell what things look like in 2021 between the Cowboys and McCoy, but he is under contract so if he wants to play he should certainly be welcome. McCoy has always been a resilient personality in the NFL and it seems like he is taking this new challenge head on.

“Anybody who knows me knows I love a challenge”

Gerald McCoy will miss the entire season as mentioned and that is not an easy reality to accept in the month of August. He released a statement by way of ESPN’s Ed Werder and in it he noted the challenge ahead of him, one he is ready for.

“Just want the fans to know I truly appreciate the warm welcome and I’m sorry this happened. The Jones family opened their doors to an old vet to have an opportunity to come and help this team win and I was beyond excited to be a Cowboy. I was really looking forward to this amazing opportunity we have in front of us. I will remain the mentor I am to the young guys and do my part to make sure that this team goes where it needs to. As far as my mindset people deal with real life problems everybody day especially now with the state our country. There is a lot of pain and heartache taking place right now that all our attention needs to go towards whether it is the pandemic or our fight for social justice. In retrospect what I’m dealing with is minimal compared to that. Therefore this is light work for me. Anybody who knows me knows I love a challenge. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!! I will be back better. LETS GET IT!!”

It is certainly admirable to see that McCoy plans on being a mentor to the younger players in spite of his injury, a role many were excited to see him play. He does seem like he has planted roots within the Cowboys organization, it is exciting to see how far those can spread out over time.
