The Dallas Cowboys continue their preparations for the 2020 NFL season. Another training camp practice is in the books so let’s recap the action.
Before we get to that, a shoutout to Gerald McCoy, who posted a message this morning as he prepared for his surgery.
Dallas Cowboys DT Gerald McCoy posted a video on Tuesday morning noting he was about to have surgery.

"I just want to say... I'm still smiling."
"To my teammates, coaches. Yall going to get it. Got a championship to go win."
"To all the fans, stay tuned!"

For anyone who missed it, here is the injury. It’s very little contact at all, just a freak accident.
Here’s video shot by @CBS11Sports photojournalist Bill Ellis of Gerald McCoy’s season ending ruptured right quadriceps tendon injury suffered in @dallascowboys 1st practice in pads today...maybe @profootballdoc can explain how this happened??? pic.twitter.com/qceuui1r1p

Obviously we are all wishing the best for him and his recovery.
On to today’s action. Some injury news:
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy on reserve OT Cam Erving: “He’s making progress. It’s an injury not of a serious nature, but they haven’t given me an exact date on when he’ll return.” Team is working out three free agent linemen today after practice. Erving yet to appear in camp.

Brandon Knight did return to practice today, getting some work at both RT & LT. but it wasn’t enough to fix the obvious depth problems at the position.

So who filled in for McCoy today?
With Gerald McCoy out, Trysten Hill took over in his spot in Tuesday’s practice. The second-round pick from 2019 is coming off a disappointing rookie season but teammates and coaches praised his offseason work. He and rookie Neville Gallimore will get... https://t.co/PNTTa8NpCC

The Cowboys latest big signing made his first appearance at a practice today. Everson Griffen is in the house.
New Cowboys DE Everson Griffen was at practice today in full pads. He did some walk-through but no team or individual drills. Should be ready to practice soon

You say you want turnovers on defense? Well, so far in training camp your wish is granted. A few INTs in today’s session.
Cowboys undrafted rookie free agent LB Francis Bernard has had an interception in each of the last two practices

Cowboys S Xavier Woods with the end-zone INT of Dak Prescott today in team drills.

With some of the injuries to guys like La’el Collins, an unexpected player is getting a lot of work against some of the stars.
RT La’el CollIns and swing tackle Cam Erving been absent from team drills in camp thus far; Erving yet to attend. There’s been no greater beneficiary than Wyatt Miller, who has gained valuable experience, working against DE DeMarcus Lawrence. Lawrence continues his strong camp.
— Michael Gehlken (@GehlkenNFL) August 18, 2020
Speaking of Lawrence, he and Aldon Smith are striking up a friendship.
Cowboys DEs Aldon Smith and DeMarcus Lawrence seem to have gravitated toward each other. At times, they can be found off to side on field, conversing between practice periods or working on their technique.

There is going to be a battle for the receiver positions after the big three of Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and CeeDee Lamb. Veteran Cedrick Wilson is making his play.
As a whole, the defense seems to be a step ahead of offense in early going. But WR Cedrick Wilson had an active day. Strung together consecutive catches from Andy Dalton in team period. Also caught multiple Dak Prescott passes in red zone.

WR Cedrick Wilson with at least three catches today.
— Calvin Watkins (@calvinwatkins) August 18, 2020
Despite the interceptions, Dak Prescott had an efficient day.
Dak Prescott was 5 of 7 and then 7 of 8 passing in two-minute drills. The second one was ended by an Xavier Woods interception in the end zone as time expired, but it looked like DeMarcus Lawrence would’ve had the sack if it was an actual game
— Jon Machota (@jonmachota) August 18, 2020
Backup Andy Dalton got in on the action with a long play to Ventell Bryant.
Andy Dalton made a big play when he had his chance to lead the 2-minute drill. Ventell Bryant beat Reggie Robinson easily off the line and Dalton found him for 40 yards down the sideline. Dalton hit Tevin Jones for the “winning” TD on the next play.

That’s all for today.
