Seeing Mike McCarthy rocking the Cowboys navy or a star on his cap has taken a lot of adjusting for football fans everywhere. Given that it took so long for training camp to get going this year as a result of Covid-19, we have jumped straight into the deep end as far as the idea of McCarthy as the Cowboys head coach is concerned.
Much of this offseason has been spent wondering exactly who McCarthy will be for America’s Team. We know that he hired a staff full of former head coaches, but he did retain offensive coordinator Kellen Moore which seems like a very positive thing.
Why exactly is that positive, though? Obviously it helps with the offensive language and things of that sort, but more than that it might be reflective of some personal growth from the head coach.
McCarthy acknowledged that he shorted the offense at times in Green Bay
The Packers boasted one of the NFL’s best offenses for most of the time that Mike McCarthy was in Titletown, and while people want to ascribe the reasoning for it purely to the fact that Aaron Rodgers was their quarterback for most of his tenure, obviously McCarthy was involved to a great degree.
It goes without saying that things really fell apart for Green Bay in 2018 which is why McCarthy was dismissed before the season even finished. This has caused some to doubt exactly who he will be in Dallas, but on Wednesday during an appearance on NFL Network with Steve Mariucci, he acknowledged that he shorted the offense at times while in Green Bay and is seeking to rectify that moving forward.
“Well I think the most important thing coming from the head coach position, Steven you’ve been there, you have to do what’s best for the football team. Frankly, I mean personally, I know I’ve mentioned it, I’ve missed a lot of components of it already, but my sole responsibility is to make sure I can help Kellen be the best play-caller possible. He’s still young at it. He has a great mind. I’m extremely impressed with him every step of the way. From building the installs, the way he’s delivered it in the meetings to the players and his on-field coaching. It’s the best decision for this football team. There’s so much more that I want to and need to focus on as far as building the program the way I see it needs to be done. So there’s a lot of energy that goes through. I just didn’t want to short the offense and I felt like I did that at times in Green Bay.”
It is definitely great to see that McCarthy feels Moore remaining the team’s play-caller is what’s best for the team, and what’s more is that he wants to prioritize those things. That takes someone of a humble nature and there is no process that generally tends to humble people like the one that he went through in his fallout with the Packers, so he has obviously taken a lot away from that.
Sometimes head coaches end up putting too much on their plate which leads to things not getting done in the best possible way. McCarthy seems to have acknowledged that as a result of his process he “shorted” the offense while in Green Bay and he is seemingly committed to not doing that with the Cowboys.
