Okay last time I’ll be speaking about the Dallas Cowboys loss to the Rams last week. The last two posts we’ve taken a look at the offensive and defensive failures and who should be blamed for them. This time around we are taking a look at the play-calling by head coach Mike McCarthy, offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.
On offense, Moore failed to buck the trend set by former head coach Jason Garrett and continued to call running plays on first down which led to the Cowboys facing some long third-down conversions. He did better when calling plays in the passing game, especially when sprinkling in play-action passes. Hopefully he can build on what he started and for the love of all that his holy, please stop running on first down.
On defense, Nolan was clearly being out-coached as his secondary was not in position to stop the Rams quick-pass scheme. The Rams receivers easily found the holes in the secondary. There was also a lack of push up the middle to negate the rushing attack of the Rams. Nolan will need to work on the secondary scheme as well as stopping the run against the Falcons lethal passing attack and the addition of Todd Gurley to help their running game.
In the end, though, Mike McCarthy is the final word, so perhaps he wasn’t aggressive enough in trying to fix the flaws. Or perhaps it was his game plan that the assistant coaches implemented that ended up in a loss.
As of right now which coach have you lost confidence in?
