We have reached the middle of the week and that is notable given that this is the final one without NFL football for the rest of the year. There has been no preseason here in 2020 and as a result putting together the team’s roster is a far more unique exercise than ever before. Difficult decisions are going to have to be made and without the benefit of tape that would otherwise be out there.
This is an unfortunate part of football as not everyone can make the final 53-man roster. Normally there would be 90 players on the team at this point but the league trimmed that down to 80 to comply with Covid-19 protocols.
Adam Redmond and Clayton Thorson have been released by the Dallas Cowboys
We are entering Mike McCarthy’s first year as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys so we are learning exactly how he wants to build his football team. While the whole picture is not known yet, this year’s squad will not include two names that we now know of, Adam Redmond and Clayton Thorson. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer they have been released.
The Cowboys are beginning to make some of their roster moves with having to get down to the 53-man limit by Saturday, releasing quarterback Clayton Thorson and offensive lineman Adam Redmond, according to sources. Thorson spent last year on the practice squad and Redmond was active for one game last year before going on injured reserve.
With all due respect, the releasing of Thorson is hardly a surprise. The Cowboys are keeping three quarterbacks at maximum and he simply does not fit into those plans. All the best to him wherever he ends up.
There will undoubtedly be some fans a bit shocked to see Redmond released, though. The Cowboys still have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, but it is not what it used to be. It feels like that group could have 10 names on it when it is all said and done and Redmond figured to be in the mix there. Obviously the coaching staff disagrees.
Update: 12:40pm ET
Shortly after the report about Adam Redmond and Clayton Thorson it was reported by The Dallas Morning News that Devin Smith is also being released.
Cowboys are releasing WR Devin Smith, source said. They are expected to retain five wide receivers on 53-man roster as projected. Smith likely to have interest on open market and land elsewhere. https://t.co/IQ2IQUkwsb
