Is Hindsight 20/20 for 2020 ?

This is the time of year to look back on the season and criticize learn from all of the mistakes. Then make 2021 a perfect season.

The problem is a lot of what they did seemed right at the time. Unless we blame ALL of the shoddy play on injuries, then what did we learn?

2020 Free Agency part 1:

When MM was hired because JJ heard bells, I heard alarms. Since when is JJ a good judge of anything? Well, there have been some successes (extending Romo? drafting Ware?), so maybe he finally got it right? Meanwhile the hungry delighted look on MM's face was a vast improvement over Redball, so there was that. Little did I suspect that MM was smiling because he had found a big pot of honey!

2020 Free Agency part 2:

I was delighted when the first moves of FA was to secure the only good WR available(albeit at great cost), then SPECFICALLY address my 3 biggest gripes: We hired former pro bowlers McCoy, Poe, C-Dix. INSTANT upgrade I posted here many times. Then, having read about the amazing transformation of Aldon Smith, I was thrilled we had SOLVED the defense immediately. Did anyone say "stacked team". I did.

Free Agency, part 3:

Then some weird stuff happened. We signed signed some JAGs at costs that 1) didn't make sense and 2) were done in the face of better options. Specifically, why did we sign the very mediocre Brown instead of Rhodes at CB. Why pay Sean Lee 4.5M to be a backup. Why pay Erving at all? But not a biggie I thought. Quality backups can be a good thing. They must be focusing on Dak .. announcement coming soon?

2020 Draft:

Settling in before the draft, we didn't need much: replacement for Cobb, replacement for Byron Jones, depth. After all, we had young guys ready to break out: Conner Williams to play to his pedigree, Connor McGovern to win the C spot, Jarwin to flash like a young Witten, Woods/Awuzie to assert their all-pro status, Trysten Hill to ... aw nevermind.

So what did we do? EXACTLY the right thing. We CRUSHED the draft. I don't know what's stopping Reggie Robinson, but I'm convinced he's the 3rd best CB on the team already. Also depth. NOW we've got a stacked team. 6th Bling, baby! Let's go!

2020 Pre-season:

The dominoes fell. McCoy. It's okay ... Hill's impressing (against Looney, Williams, hmmm), TCraw can drop into the role that won him a 9M deal .. we're good maybe.

Collins. It's okay ... Knight looked pretty good last year. ZMart can play RT. McGovern will be unleashed. We're good.

Dix. Cut?? WTF. OMG Wilson must be killing it in practice. Wait. Thompson is our SS? Didn't he suck last year?

Griffen. Totally makes sense if TCraw is our 3T. QBs won't have time to breathe! But why wasn't he signed already and why so cheap for his pedigree? Wondering but feeling better. Actually, still confused why TCraw on the roster, because FAs are out there, but if he can turn back time. Right?

2020 Game 1:

Do we know what we're doing? The OL is weak as ever. Zeke has no juice. Dak is blowing opportunities. Why is the defense watching them dump the ball all over the field? Or not tackling? Are we playing a 3-4, 4-3, nickel or keystone hybred? What's the deal coach MM? We need to play better he says? No kidding. How's that pot of honey "coach"?

2020 Subsequent games bleh:

It's apparent that we hired guys based on reputation with no realistic planning. I don't want to dive into it, but the signings made sense IF you believe the players can swap between schemes (which some have never tried) on a dime ... or that it's really 2017 when some of these guys still had talent.

2020 Lasting impressions:

MM is a fraud. It's one thing to stare at your navel for a year and chant analytics, hoping a revelation will occur. But in the end, he needs to get real. He should have been taking notes from Aaron Rodgers, no matter how bitter. Or even Troy Aikman for that matter. Troy, you're bored with announcing, right? We may have an opening.

I don't know what to say about Nolan. He speaks less than Pence. But I never heard a mea culpa and IMO he should have taken out full ads in the local newspapers to plead forgiveness. Or at least winked at the camera to say ... I didn't hire these guys. Actually, he kinda did.

2021 Hope is Eternal:

MM will wake up. Quinn is realistic and can teach. Dak will sign a team-friendly deal. The OL will be healthy. KM will assert his new authority (and jibe with Dak in miraculous ways). We will sign a couple on-the-money FAs on defense (DT,FS,Aldon Smith)and draft defense too (CB,LB). LVE and Jayson will turn back the clock (oddly, an improvement). All of the young guys will take huge strides forward. We will cheer for the best Cowboy team since 1995. And all will be right with the world. .
