Daniel Jeremiah mock draft: Dallas Cowboys add some depth in the trenches

As crazy as it seems we are only a few months away from the 2021 NFL Draft. Between now and then, the Dallas Cowboys will be making a number of decisions that impact their team. Obviously they have to figure out what they are going to do with Dak Prescott’s long-term contract situation, decide on a number of pending free agents to be, and potentially bring in some new faces (how about a nice safety?).

Whatever the Cowboys are able to add in free agency, they are still going to need to draft well. How they spend the 10th overall pick will be of extreme fascination as the Cowboys haven’t picked this high since they were number four overall in 2016.

In a perfect world the Cowboys would be able to trade out of number 10 and pick up more draft capital, a reality that is seemingly becoming all the more possible these days. However, if Dallas ultimately makes the pick at #10, how about a sturdy offensive tackle?

Daniel Jeremiah has the Dallas Cowboys taking Oregon OT Penei Sewell in his first mock draft of the season

There are few draft minds more connected to what is happening this time of year than NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah. Consider that in early March of last year he accurately called CeeDee Lamb to the Cowboys (although he hedged that with the idea of Amari Cooper leaving in free agency which did not happen).

DJ’s first mock of the season has been released and in it he has the Cowboys adding to what was once the best unit of their team. He’s got Dallas taking Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell.

School: Oregon | Year: Junior

Sewell could go as high as No. 3 overall to the Dolphins, but there’s a chance he slips to the Cowboys. They need to get younger and more talented along the offensive line.

There is no question that the Cowboys would be wise to add star talent to their offensive line as it is more apparent than ever that we are much closer to the end of Tyron Smith’s stellar career than we are the beginning. Smith and La’el Collins will in all likelihood be back in 2021, and the Cowboys did get depth players some legitimate experience last season in Brandon Knight and Terence Steele, but still, Penei is different.

Of course due to how great Sewell is it seems somewhat unlikely that he will last all the way to number 10 overall. The Miami Dolphins seem like a candidate to take him as well (although if they wind up trading for Deshaun Watson they won’t be using that pick), and the Cincinnati Bengals are obviously going to want to protect last year’s first overall pick in Joe Burrow.

Jeremiah Daniel has the Bengals taking the first tackle off of the board, although he has them going with Northwestern OT Rashawn Slater. Time will tell which of the two tackles goes first, but the Cowboys landing one of them sure would be nice.
