The Dallas Cowboys absolutely trounced the New England Patriots in this week’s Madden simulation, 27-0. To put it in context, New England only reached the redzone once on the day, but we’ll get to that. These are the biggest takeaways from a dominant Cowboy victory.
3. Ezekiel Elliott continues to carve up defenses behind this o-line
On the game’s second snap, Zeke burst up the gut through the heart of the Patriot defense for a gain of 12 yards. It not only set the tone early but proved to be an indicator of what was to come as Elliott handled all of the rushing duties for the ‘Boys on his way to a 100-yard day with a touchdown.
He helped the offense get in a rhythm and then Dak Prescott went to work picking apart the New England secondary. Sound familiar? It should. That’s been the Cowboys’ MO in these sims.
2. Randy Gregory is a game-wrecker week in and week out
The pressure Randy Gregory gets on opposing quarterbacks isn’t just an every play sort of thing in real life, it’s also the case in Madden. A couple of weeks ago he had a three-sack day. In this game, he recovered a Mac Jones fumble on a Terrell Basham sack and then returned it 35 yards for the score.
Prior to that play, the game was 6-0 with under two minutes until the half. The play by Gregory seemed to open the floodgate as Dallas took a slugfest and turned it into a TKO.
1. The Cowboy defense just keeps getting better and better
Anytime you pitch a shutout, you know your defense had a strong day, but this performance was truly special.
Following Gregory’s scoop and score that made it 13-0, the defense tacked on two more takeaways on New England’s next two possessions. The first came on an Anthony Brown interception and led to a second score off a turnover before the half. New England went from having the ball down 6-0 just inside the two-minute warning to a pair of turnovers and a 20-0 halftime deficit.
The Patriots would then take the opening kickoff of the second half before tossing yet another interception—this time to Demontae Kazee. Elliott would convert that takeaway into a third consecutive Cowboy touchdown to take a 27-0 lead midway through the third quarter.
As if that wasn’t impressive enough, New England would eventually cobble together a great drive, getting all the way down to the Cowboy one-yard line before being stopped on three straight run plays for a turnover on downs.
In total, the Cowboy defense had two interceptions, one fumble recovery for a score, three sacks, a goal line stand that resulted in a turnover on downs, and zero points allowed.
Yep, that’ll get the job done.
