[UPDATE]: We can stop with anymore speculation about cornerback Stephon Gilmore and a possible future in Dallas. The Pats traded him to the Panthers. [END UPDATE]
All offseason, given the unhappiness of cornerback Stephon Gilmore with the New England Patriots over his contract, there were suggestions that the Cowboys should trade for the disgruntled cover man. Now, the Cowboys could potentially acquire Gilmore without even giving up a player or draft capital in return if he does, in fact, get released.
But the Patriots could still try to trade Gilmore as his release will not be official until 4 PM ET today. Sources around the league believe that the Patriots are ultimately trying to trade him before the release happens. In fact, there are rumors that Green Bay is a potential landing spot.
I'd be shocked if the Patriots aren't able to trade Gilmore, and the Packers are considered the favorite in league circles.— Greg A. Bedard (@GregABedard) October 6, 2021
The Patriots are releasing/trading Gilmore, who currently sits on their PUP list with a quad injury.
A stunner: Patriots are releasing four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who was eligible to come off the Physically Unable to Perform List after Week 6, source tells ESPN. pic.twitter.com/31H8KQF8hq— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 6, 2021
As noted, Gilmore is on the PUP list but can come off of it after Week 6. It’s unknown just how severe his quad injury was/is, or was he placed on the PUP list because of the impasse between him and the Patriots over his contract. Gilmore is slated to make $7 million this year which is extremely low for a high quality corner.
Gilmore was the defensive MVP of the league in 2019 and would be available to any team if he makes it to a release. Before Cowboys fans get too excited about the idea of pursuing Gilmore to pair with Trevon Diggs, there is another team that would become the front-runner for his service if he is ultimately released and becomes a free agent.
I'm told just now that the Tampa Bay #Bucs are at least one team that 'will definitely investigate,' CB Stephon Gilmore's availability, per league source.— IG: JosinaAnderson (@JosinaAnderson) October 6, 2021
Given that he is a former teammate of Tom Brady, and that former New England players have ended up in Tampa Bay, and the banged-up nature of the Buccaneers secondary right now, you’d have to believe this is the odds-on favorite as a landing spot is Gilmore is a free agent.
Still, if the Cowboys are so inclined, they could make a run at Gilmore and upgrade their secondary. With a team playing as well as the Cowboys are now, it could be time for Jerry and Stephen Jones to throw caution to the wind and make a play for a win-now team. They could make a trade offer that the Pats would accept, and then re-work Gilmore’s contract.
