It has now been over two weeks since the Dallas Cowboys put together their 2021 draft class which was headlined by linebacker Micah Parsons. The state of the linebacker group as a whole is a very interesting one as Dallas also walked away with Jabril Cox during the 2021 NFL Draft. A few days after picking up their new players the organization chose not to pick up Leighton Vander Esch’s fifth-year option which is an indication that things could be changing in the middle of the defense rather soon.
Consider that ESPN’s Todd Archer said on 105.3 The Fan on Friday that Parsons could be playing the MIKE role while Vander Esch is off to the WILL. The quote did not include any spot for Jaylon Smith which again is an indication at how fast things truly do change in the NFL.
Wherever he is playing, Parsons is going to be wearing his Dallas Cowboys uniform while doing it. With rookie minicamps going on this weekend, he got some work in while donning his Cowboys practice uniform, including the number 11 that linebackers can now wear.

It certainly will be interesting to see how much usage Parsons gets at MIKE through training camp when he is part of the entire group of linebackers. The Cowboys didn’t spend a first-round pick on him to not see him play a bunch of snaps so his work usage should be high from the jump.
You might have seen Parsons during NFL Films’ production Hey Rookie that aired in the run-up to the draft. We sat down with Shannon Furman who oversees the production and she gave us a lot of insight as to what Parsons (plus the other rookies involved who were Justin Fields, Kyle Pitts, and Jaycee Horn) were like both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. You can watch our interview with her right here.
