Why Sean Lee would be the perfect coach and mentor for Cowboys rookie Micah Parsons

Micah Parsons would benefit greatly from Sean Lee’s guidance.

Out with the old, in with the new. Just as one former Penn State linebacker’s career is coming to an end with the Dallas Cowboys, another one’s is just beginning.

Mere days after Sean Lee decided to hang up his cleats and officially retire from the NFL, the Cowboys drafted Micah Parsons in the first-round of the 2021 NFL Draft with the 12th overall pick. Parsons shouldn’t be considered Lee’s direct replacement, however, he is expected to be a longtime fixture at the position like No. 50 was during his time in Dallas.

The Dallas Cowboys newest LB is an athletically gifted physical specimen who is just starting to scratch the surface of his natural talent. For him to reach his potential though the Cowboys need to help him learn what it means to be a professional both on and off the field. What better way to do that than give him a resource like Sean Lee?

Since entering the league in 2010 as a second-round pick by the Cowboys, Sean Lee has been praised for his work ethic and character both on and off the field. He is not only highly respected by his teammates, but by other players and coaches around the league as well.

This is exactly the kind of resource the Cowboys should try to utilize in order to get the most out of Micah Parsons. Someone who’s been there and done that and shares the Nittany Lions connection. Lee is exactly the kind of person Parsons needs in his corner right now, and the Cowboys would be wise to do everything within their power to make it happen.

Right now Lee is reflecting on what he wants to do next. Coaching is more than likely in his future, but when and where that will happen has yet to be determined. The Cowboys, should be touching base with him daily to see where his head is at and if he wants to start his coaching career in the same place he spent his entire NFL one.

There’s a lot Lee can pass on to Parsons. His dedication to film study. How to overcome adversity. How to be a professional on and off the field. And, that’s not even mentioning all of the physical aspects needed to play the LB position at a high level.

If Lee is indeed looking for something to fill the void playing football has left, taking on a talented project like Parsons could be a great place for him to start. He could relish the opportunity to help him reach his potential and the Cowboys would no doubt be better for it.

The Dallas Cowboys should be doing whatever it takes to make this happen, whether it’s on a full-time coaching gig or on a consulting basis.
