It has begun. The Dallas Cowboys conducted their first 2021 training camp practice in Oxnard today. There was a flood of tweets from the media as practice went on, and here is a rundown.
On the injury front, there was not so good news and very good news.
The Cowboys will place Amari Cooper (ankle), DeMarcus Lawrence (back), Trysten Hill (knee), Greg Zuerlein (back), Chauncey Golston (hamstring) and Mitch Hyatt (knee) on PUP to open camp, according to a source. Hill and Hyatt likely need the most rehab time compared to others.
— Todd Archer (@toddarcher) July 22, 2021
Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence (back) should be ready Week 1. Same for WR Amari Cooper (ankle), K Greg Zuerlein (back) and DE Chauncey Golston (hamstring).
— Michael Gehlken (@GehlkenNFL) July 22, 2021
But already fighting for job, DT Trysten Hill (ACL) in a precarious position. Highly unlikely to suit up in 7 weeks vs. Bucs.
None of the Cowboys’ starting offensive linemen are on PUP list. While expected, that is nonetheless significant. LT Tyron Smith (neck), RG Zack Martin (calf) and RT La’el Collins (hip) all ready to go. Mike McCarthy: “They’ll take all the reps with the ones.”
— Michael Gehlken (@GehlkenNFL) July 22, 2021
Time will tell how serious these PUP designations are, but it is at least very fun and encouraging that Blake Jarwin & Demontae Kazee aren’t on it.
— David Helman (@HelmanDC) July 22, 2021
I continue to be blown away by Kazee’s recovery from an Achilles tear that happened in October.
And then the angels sang.

We’ve all heard about how in shape Ezekiel Elliott looks. But he is not alone.
Demarcus Lawrence looks lean. You love to see it. https://t.co/vYaISwNRzp

This has got to be the leanest La’el Collins has been in his major football career. pic.twitter.com/BF8GsXPB3L

Happy birthday!
Some Cowboys fans are serenading RB Ezekiel Elliott, repeatedly singing him “happy birthday.” He turned 26 today.

Cords are a good sign.

Say more things like this.
The confidence the #Cowboys have regarding Dak Prescott’s recovery from a gruesome leg and ankle injury is reflected in his running routes and leaping to make a catch as QB group practices two-minute drill in first training camp practice just now.

Not good news for a guy already on the bubble.
LB Francis Bernard has already suffered a setback. Just a few minutes into camp, he went into the trainers tent and has now walked off into the locker room. More details to come.
— Nick Eatman (@nickeatman) July 22, 2021
Cowboys LB Francis Bernard suffered a hamstring injury during the first hour of practice. Disappointing development for one of top undrafted rookies in team’s 2020 class. He is done for today.

Lots moar, please.

I’m a big fan of this.
Dan Quinn is personally leading the DL drills right now.
— Mark Lane (@therealmarklane) July 22, 2021
No wonder players love Quinn so much... The hands-in approach is so awesome... https://t.co/jPmMXpO4bk

CB1 showing out.
Trevon Diggs gets an interception off Dak Prescott along the sideline on the first play of 7 on 7 drills
— Jon Machota (@jonmachota) July 22, 2021
Trevon Diggs’ first two reps of seven on seven and he records a pick on Dak Prescott throw to Michael Gallup and breaks up a Garrett Gilbert throw to Johnny Dixon. Blake Jarwin got a Prescott completion on the third rep.
— Todd Archer (@toddarcher) July 22, 2021
Lots of big, fit looking players.
Slim Bohanna is fun https://t.co/2M5TBpDgMC
— Joey Ickes (@JoeyIckes) July 22, 2021
Maybe it’s because we didn’t see these guys up close last year, but Gallimore looks bigger than I thought he was. Confused him for the big rookie Bohanna a few times.
— Derek Eagleton (@derekeagleton) July 22, 2021
Very positive sign for the rookie who missed so much of the OTAs.

More DE stuff.
Bradlee Anae and Terrell Basham looking quick and fit during some brief one-on-one drills. Good explosion off the line.

Be still, my heart.
Dak completed deep ball to Malik Turner over Jourdan Lewis. Perfect ball.
— Jeff Cavanaugh (@JC1053) July 22, 2021
This is great stuff.
Cowboys taking advantage of having a healthy TE Blake Jarwin on field, giving LB Micah Parsons a number of man-coverage reps against him on 7-on-7. Good chance to evaluate, develop the rookie first-round pick in coverage. Contested matchup so far. Parsons’ makeup speed stands out
— Michael Gehlken (@GehlkenNFL) July 22, 2021
Might not want to sleep on Carlos Watkins.
Front 4 from L-R to start team is Basham, Gallimore, Watkins, Gregory
— Jeff Cavanaugh (@JC1053) July 22, 2021
How long will this last, I wonder?
Terence Steele is in at RT for team drills, I guess they’re still going slow with LC.
— David Helman (@HelmanDC) July 22, 2021
first team D:
Basham, Watkins, Gallimore, Gregory
LVE, Smith
Kazee, Wilson
Brown (LCB), Diggs (RCB), Lewis (slot)
It’s really happening.
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott takes his first 11-on-11 snap since suffering ankle fracture last October vs. Giants. Screen pass to RB Ezekiel Elliott goes for nearly 20 yards. Full workload is expected this camp for Prescott. pic.twitter.com/thJYIqH1vL

Cowboys in 11-on-11 with live pass rush. Quarterback Dak Prescott taking reps with 1s. No pads yet of course. But still: Final hurdle ✅
— Jori Epstein (@JoriEpstein) July 22, 2021
I’m telling you, this defense is going to be better.
Another nice play by Trevon Diggs in team drills pic.twitter.com/my3MXXVSWx
— Jon Machota (@jonmachota) July 22, 2021
I’m enjoying watching #Cowboys Trevon Diggs. He had a little back and forth with Dak Prescott at one point, a couple plays after picking Prescott off. You can’t tell a lot out of pads, but he’s in on everything in his direction. It’s a good day one start for a vital player.
— Charles Robinson (@CharlesRobinson) July 22, 2021
And the offense will be on fire.
And Micah is anything but slow. https://t.co/RsyOFv1FXS

Some down roster guys also having a good day.
Ron’Dell Carter with back to back nice rushes
— Jeff Cavanaugh (@JC1053) July 22, 2021
Cowboys CB Reggie Robinson has such a better feel for cornerback than he ever did at safety as rookie. Switch to natural position gives Robinson a chance for NFL success. Here, he breaks up a Dak Prescott pass intended for Blake Jarwin in 11-on-11. pic.twitter.com/z276M3nEDS
— Michael Gehlken (@GehlkenNFL) July 22, 2021
— Shan Shariff (@1053SS) July 22, 2021
Overall, looks like Mike McCarthy has the team hit the ground running.
Today felt like the most work Cowboys have gotten in Day 1 that I can remember. But @BryanBroaddus would know better.
— Shan Shariff (@1053SS) July 22, 2021
That’s about it. Lots of stuff, mostly good, to process. We want to be cautious about reading too much into the first practice of the year, but it is hard not to feel really good so far.
On #Cowboys Prescott, not going to assess his passing as he gets back into a groove. But movement on that ankle looks good. They’re rolling him out quite a bit. Looks like he never had an injury. That would be the first box I’d want to check. Does he look healthy from jump? Yes.
— Charles Robinson (@CharlesRobinson) July 22, 2021
Time to get hyped ✅ https://t.co/Kvpk3HHxNu
