The Cowboys could consider bringing in QB Blake Bortles for QB2 competition

Yay or Nay?

With the Aaron Rodgers/Green Bay drama finally coming to an end, that also meant the end for Blake Bortles in Green Bay as the QB2. For the Cowboys, there’s still no great answer for the backup quarterback in Dallas. In the early stages of training camp, it seems that Garrett Gilbert has been the most impressive backup quarterback in camp, which confirms what we saw from the 2020 season.

When Cooper Rush was temporarily sidelined with a back injury, Gilbert and Ben DiNucci were the only other quarterbacks in Oxnard behind Dak Prescott. The sights and sounds from Oxnard suggest that Ben DiNucci looks eerily similar to how he looked in Philadelphia in the one start he had in 2020. Garrett Gilbert has had some good reps in camp, but handing him the QB2 job with no real competition would not be the wisest of plans for the Cowboys coaching staff.

Is that where Blake Bortles comes into play?

Bortles, 29, has spent the last seven years in the NFL after being drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the third overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Bortles had an impressive start to his career in Jacksonville before fizzling out, and played there for five seasons before moving on to the Rams after the 2018 season. After leading the Jaguars to the playoffs in 2017, Bortles and the Jaguars regressed heavily after their impressive playoff run.

While no one in Dallas should expect Bortles to magically return to his 2017 form, Bortles would be a qualified quarterback for the QB2 job in Dallas, similar to Andy Dalton last year.

Over the last two seasons, Bortles hasn’t gotten much playing time in Los Angeles, and he was serving as Jordan Love’s backup in Packers OTA’s with Aaron Rodgers holding out, but with Rodgers back in Green Bay, Bortles is now looking for a new home.

Could Dallas be the right fit for him and could he be the right fit for Dallas?
