Cowboys’ Jerry Jones believes Tony Romo should be a 1st-ballot Hall of Famer - Tim Daniels, Bleacher Report
Tony Romo a first-ballot Hall of Famer? Jerry Jones think so.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Friday he believes former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo should be a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection.
Jones discussed Romo, who will be eligible for Hall of Fame voting for the first time in 2022, during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan (h/t the Dallas Morning News):
“Well, I think there’s no question in my mind that Tony is skilled, at a skilled level, and had accomplishments statistically that were there. The fact that we did not have a Super Bowl during that time is always going to be in the conversation as to where Tony Romo will rank—not rank, but where he’s acknowledged. You’re talking to a guy that he would be a first-round ballot with me, and I don’t apologize for that.”
Romo put together a solid statistical career. He completed 65.3 percent of his throws for 34,183 yards with 248 touchdowns and 117 interceptions in 156 games across 12 seasons in Dallas.
Those numbers are a little short of the typical Hall of Fame standard, however, and Romo didn’t capture any Super Bowl championships, which are the main factor that can help elevate a resume that’s otherwise a little short statistically. The California native went 2-4 in six playoff starts.
Jaguars trade QB Gardner Minshew to Eagles for conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2022 - Kevin Patra, NFL.com
The trade the Dallas Cowboys should’ve made, but unfortunately didn’t.
Minshew Mania is headed to Philadelphia.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that the Jacksonville Jaguars traded backup quarterback Gardner Minshew to the Eagles for a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2022, per sources informed of the situation.
The team confirmed the move shortly thereafter, adding that QB Nick Mullens has been released by the Eagles in a corresponding move.
Rapoport added that the pick can become a fifth-rounder for the Jaguars if Minshew plays in at least one half of three games. As for the Eagles, landing the young QB aligns with the consideration the club gave toward spending a late-rounder on a QB prospect this year. Instead, they will use a late-rounder next year on a QB with starting experience.
Minshew has been the subject of trade rumors since the Jags landed the No. 1 overall pick, which they used to select Trevor Lawrence.
Updates: La’el Collins’ injury status; more - Cowboys Staff Writers, The Mothership
La’el Collins should be good to go for the season opener against the Buccaneers.
La’el Collins did not finish Friday’s practice because of a neck/shoulder stinger, and head coach Mike McCarthy says the issue “doesn’t seem of a serious nature, but it’s something we’re watching.”
Collins also had some discomfort in the neck/shoulder area during practice last week but returned the next day and played against the Texans on Aug. 21.
“I think it’s part of some of the things he’s dealt with in the past, so based on the information I have currently, it doesn’t seem to be a long-term concern,” McCarthy said.
Collins is at Saturday’s practice but not practicing. He’s unlikely to play in Sunday’s preseason finale against Jacksonville, as McCarthy said about 30 players will be held out of the game for rest.
4 players the Dallas Cowboys should sign if they’re cut this week - Steven Mullenax, The Landry Hat
Dallas Cowboys should definitely be monitoring roster cuts for potential upgrades.
Kevin Strong, DT – Detroit Lions
Like the Cowboys at linebacker, the Detroit Lions have a massive amount of talent at the defensive tackle position. And if it forces the Lions to part ways with Kevin Strong, Dallas should pounce.
Detroit is currently in the midst of yet another rebuild in the Motor City. And this offseason, general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell kicked off that new era in Motown by investing heavily in the trenches.
That included acquiring defensive tackle Michael Brockers in a trade with the Loa Angeles Rams. And in the draft, the Lions selected Washington defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike in the second round and North Carolina State defensive tackle Alim McNeill in the third.
With an overabundance of talent at the position, something has to give. That’s where a player like Strong, who himself has had a stellar showing this preseason, might become available. Against the Colts Friday night, he registered three total tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack (although he should have had two sacks).
The Cowboys will be without second-year defensive tackle Neville Gallimore to start the season due to an elbow injury. And Dallas could really use some more help to secure the interior of their defensive line. A disruptor like Strong would be an ideal fit if available.
Moose crossing? Nick Ralston’s path to Cowboys’ 53-man roster may be paved with history - Tim Lettiero, Cowboys Wire
Fullbacks matter too! Nick Ralston could be a tough cut for the Cowboys.
The fullback position in the modern game is an often overlooked position, carried currently by the likes of Kyle Juszczyk and Anthony Sherman. These names are notable as their respective teams are able to utilize their unique build and skillset in order to be a contributing factor to their offense.
Ralston looks to do the same for the Dallas Cowboys. With Sewo Olonilua out for the season, this is his chance to make an impact. His career will start out primarily as a core special teamer, however should he impress there and in practice there is a good chance for him to work his way onto the field more often. Although the opportunities for a fullback to make a difference are far and few, Ralston has the tenacity, versatility and work rate to make sure his name makes that 53-man roster.
The late injury to RB Rico Dowdle opens up an opportunity for a third running back to make the club. His 32 special teams snaps through three exhibition contests shows the club is taking a long look at him as a potential candidate but even if he doesn’t make the full roster, he has a great chance at the practice squad.
Growing up a fan of the club, Ralston knows the legend of Daryl Johnston even if he never watched him play in person. This could be the beginning of his own fullback legacy.
