Report: Cowboys looking at Cam Newton situation after cutting down to Cooper Rush as QB2

The Cowboys cuts give us some clarity at quarterback, but more news could be coming

It may not rank up there as one of the great training camp battles of all time, but there is apparently a winner in the race to be the Cowboys backup quarterback. Cooper Rush has emerged victorious, at least for now.

But there is always the possibility the Cowboys go outside the organization. There is a report out now about Cam Newton, who was released by the Patriots.

Admittedly that is somewhat vague, but one thing it does seem to indicate is that the Cowboys could be looking for someone else to bring in. It is expected that a few more quarterbacks might hit the market later today. And there is always the possibility of trading for a quarterback, something that happened with Gardner Minshew last week (something that many Cowboys lamented that the Cowboys should have done).

As for now, Rush just keeps hanging on as a backup quarterback in Dallas. He spent years backing up Dak Prescott before he was let go, then brought back when the Cowboys had so many injury issues at quarterback last season. Now he has managed to get both Garrett Gilbert, the presumed favorite for the backup spot all offseason, and Mike McCarthy’s guy, Ben DiNucci, booted from the roster.

Even though Rush has won the competition for now, he doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. It wasn’t like he had a blistering preseason where he totally vanquished the competition. It was more like he was the least bad of the bunch so he won it by default. His good game against the Texans vaulted him to the front, but Sunday against Jacksonville wasn’t exactly impressive.

His history also doesn’t say “it’s cool, he’ll be all right.” He has played in just a handful of NFL games. mainly in mop up duty, and didn’t even get a start last year in the Cowboys revolving door of quarterbacks.

We might not know the answer to the backup QB position until later this week, or it might just be that Cooper Rush is it.
