The Dallas Cowboys are hosting the Washington Commanders on Thanksgiving Day and on paper it looks a little like a mismatch. The Cowboys are 7-3 on the season and have been on a roll lately, with only the Eagles road loss marring their recent form. They also have a 12-game winning streak at home that is active, and their offensive form at home has been phenomenal. The offense has really clicked post-bye week and the Mike McCarthy Texas Coast scheme has found its rhythm.
The Commanders seem to be trending in the other direction. They have lost two games in a row, including a 31-19 loss at home to the New York Giants. The Cowboys just recently beat the Giants 49-17.
DraftKings Sportsbook has the Cowboys as 11-point favorites over the Commanders. But sometimes short weeks can throw a team off. And playing a division rival always brings in an element of uncertainty into games. So while it looks like the Cowboys are easy picks for the game, there are reasons to think the Commanders could cover the spread if not win.
Let’s see what some other sites say about the game.
This is just too many points. The Commanders had one of the unluckiest games in recent memory today, as they lost three fumbles and threw three interceptions, combining for six turnovers. The Cowboys beat up on bad teams, but the Commanders are at least a respectable opponent. This feels like an overreaction to Sunday’s box scores.
Pick: Commanders +11
Here we have an opinion that the Commanders should cover the large spread. It’s not a crazy notion; Dallas needs to guard against taking a team lightly, and the fact that the Commanders are division rivals could skew things.
The second course is less appetizing, given the Commanders just lost at home to the Giants 31-19 in Week 11. The Cowboys beat those same Giants 49-17 in Week 10. They just beat up the Panthers, 33-10. They rip into bad teams by pouring it on with Dak Prescott’s now sizzling passing, the running game, defense and special teams. The Commanders tend to show up vs. their archrivals during this holiday tradition, but there’s big change coming in Washington soon with Micah Parsons, Daron Bland and Dallas also ripping into Sam Howell.
Pick: Cowboys win 38-14 and cover the spread.
Now we have a more conventional take that the Cowboys will roll at home over an inferior Commanders team.
The Commanders are a mess right now. The Cowboys are not. Look for that to continue. Dallas’ defense is just too good.
Prediction: Cowboys 31, Commanders 17
Another take that that Dallas will roll.
