On Saturday it was reported that Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith will miss the team’s Week 16 trip to Miami with a back injury. He is not traveling with the team this weekend but there is optimism he will return next Saturday when Dallas hosts the Detroit Lions. Chuma Edoga will get the start in Smith’s place.

This will be the fourth game that Smith has missed in 2023. He was out for two weeks earlier in the year, the loss to Arizona and the victory over the Patriots. He also sat out the Week 8 victory over the Rams. He has missed at least three games every season since 2016, but so far this has been his healthiest year since 2020.

Edoga will get his sixth start this season, having filled in for both Tyron and Tyler Smith at times. Dallas has managed to go 5-1 in those games, only losing to the Cardinals.

Tyron Smith suffered his injury during Dallas’ loss to the Buffalo Bills last Sunday. He was not formally declared out until Saturday, which is a good sign that he could return next week. While the Cowboys could use every victory the rest of the way, upcoming games against the Lions and Commanders are more critical to their postseason positioning.

Dallas has already clinched a playoff spot and is likely to fall no lower than the fifth seed based on the current NFC standings. Still, they’ll miss their veteran left tackle against a solid Miami pass rush.
