After their 22-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Christmas Eve, the Dallas Cowboys can begin their New Year’s resolution early and get back on track in a short week against the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions on Saturday. The Cowboys were without Tyron Smith against Miami, which made a big difference. Here’s where they stand regarding injuries to open the week.

As usual, the Cowboys gave several of their veterans the day off to rest to start the week of practice. The veterans who were off Tuesday were Brandin Cooks, Stephon Gilmore, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Zack Martin. Rico Dowdle and Malik Hooker were both limited with ankle injuries. Jonathan Hankins was again absent from practice with an ankle injury of his own. As for Tyron Smith, he was held out of today’s practice with the same back injury that kept him out of the Dolphins game.

Speaking of Smith, he did say that he was feeling better. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones emphasized how integral of a piece Smith is and feels optimistic about his return this week.

To open the week, Detroit has reported a few injuries. Defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson was a limited participant with a pectoral injury. The Detroit offensive line is banged up but several of their linemen practiced in some capacity. Penei Sewell and Frank Ragnow were full participants. Meanwhile, Taylor Decker was limited with a groin injury.
