OL 2/3 through the Season

After 12 games, we are about 2/3 through the season. We have a large enough sample to see how well the OL has done. As I did at the 1/3 mark, I provide the PFF scores and rankings for each player. To provide a better comparison I converted the rankings into percentiles. I use the following quintiles [five equal group] for a summary.

Quintile summary

80-100...GRT [great]
60-079...AA [above average]
40-059...AVE [average]
20-039...BA [below average]
00-019...TER [terrible]

Tackles of 83 ranked

Name…….score…rank…pct…summary

Classic...86.5..02..98..GRT
Edoga.....61.9..52..38..BA
Steele....50.2..75..10..TER
Richards..60.6..NES

NES  = not enough snaps

Classic is back to form. Unfortunately, Steele is not after his injury last year. It is good for him to play, but we need him to play well.

Guards of 76 ranked

New......78.8..04..95..GRT
Martin...72.4..13..83..GRT
McG......58.4..47..38..BA
Torrence.58.1..49..35..BA
Bass.....49.0..NES

New is playing outstanding and Martin is still playing well, but not dominating. I added McGovern and Torrence of Buffalo for comparison.

Edoga has filled in well on the OL at both tackle and guard. He is a backup, but that is the role of a veteran backup. He was far cheaper than other free agents based on his injury history. Compare how Edoga has done vs McG at guard. WE did not invest any draft capital for Edoga.

Note the BUF starters are better, but also a lot more expensive [McG salary] or [Torrence in draft capital] than Bass. Bass has filled in but is a backup. He now plays mostly on ST. Yet you do not want to have backups playing on the OL.

Centers of 39 ranked

Biadasz...61.3..20..49..AVE
Hoffman...55.2..NES

Hoffman was signed to the active roster after starting the season on the PS. He was activated for the maximum number of games and had to be signed. He is another cheap, but quality backup. Compare his cost to McG, who was our primary backup center last year.

PFF ranks the full OL as a whole. Remember, they just add the individual scores together for their UNIT grades. We know the OL is MORE than the sum of the parts.

The OL as a whole

LT..Classic..GRT
LG..New......GRT
OC..Biadasz..AVE
RG..Martin...GRT
RT..Steele...TER

The LEFT side with Classic and New is formidable. Last year, Martin and Steele were the best guard/tackle in the league. Steele has not recovered from his injuries, but has been playing better lately. If he can return to form, the OL is a top-level unit, among the best in the league.

Our backups have filled in admirably. Hoffman is our primary backup center. Edoga is our primary backup at both guard and tackle. He is our 6th man to use a basketball term. Bass is just a guard, but has filled in at both positions.

We seemed to have focused on left or right players instead of a true swing backup tackle Richards has played LG and LT.

Bass and Richards have gotten quality snaps, but they do not have enough snaps to rank. Bass has played mostly on ST in recent games. Richards is often a healthy scratch as Classic has played well. Edoga is active for a tackle if needed.

The three-week countdown has been started for Waletzko. He has huge potential and at least would provide solid depth.

ROOKIES

I also tracked the rookies drafted for comparison. Listed by position, I added the draft slot and team. There may be a few UDFA who are playing, but that is beyond my scope.

You can see why the team decided to go in another direction than using an early draft pick on the OL. Last year, New was played above average at left tackle. This year, there are few rookies doing well.

There were lots of big names that the mock drafts focused on. There were five first round OL picks this year. It is good to remember, our draft slot. We were not going to trade up this year, so we had to look at who was realistically available to us.

Johnson is playing terribly at tackle. Skoronski is playing average. He was thought to be the best OL in this draft but moved inside as he graduated to the pros.

D Wright is average. Jones is playing average as a tackle. I thought if we drafted Jones, he would be a guard for us. All were gone by the time we drafted. Yet guard seems to be our strength this year.

Note my personal favorite Harrison was drafted right after our pick of Mazi. Harrison is very young. He started the season terribly, but has gotten stronger as the season has gone on. Maturity matters but we like to draft young players who can develop. He is still a player to keep an eye on.

We considered Bergeron in the first round. He is playing average at guard.

Last year, we had New who was above average at left tackle. Others did well last year. Yet this year, NONE is playing above average at any OL and only a handful are playing as well as average.

How are your mock drafts doing?
