10 Thoughts on the Offensive Line (Dr. P is probably right about LT)

The Offensive Line has been scaring me...

So today I took some time and processed.

1. After thinking he was wrong, I now agree with Dr. P that Tulsa (aka "New Smith") will be the LT, or at least that's where the Cowboys are going to start him and keep him barring some really bad luck.

2. The idea that Steele might be moved to LG is highly unlikely

3. Tyron is the starter at RT until Steele gets back and then moves to swing tackle (see 6.)

4. I count 5 players that likely will be competing for the LG spot:

  • Asim Richards
  • Chuma Edoga *
  • Josh Ball
  • Matt Farniokl
  • T.J. Bass
  • Free agent? If none of the 5 work out
*Most likely to start the season as starting LG due to experience.

5. Oline prediction:

  • LT- Tyler Smith
  • LG- ?
  • C- Biadasz
  • RG - Martin
  • RT - Tyron Smith / Steele

6. Since it's unlikely that Tyron Smith plays a full season for the first time since 2015, I'd like to see a platoon of Smith / Steele until Steele is completely ready at which time then Tyron Smith becomes the ST.

(Note: I live in Seattle and watch the SeaHawks platoon James Carpenter at LG coming back from injury. The SeaHawks scored either a TD or FG several times in a row when he was on the field at LG and did not score when Paul Mc(Something) was playing LG. I don't know why NFL teams don't employ that strategy more for older or ailing players on the mend).

7. My pet cat is T.J. Bass. Everything I've read about him makes me wonder why he wasn't drafted.

8. Secondarily I am rooting for Edoga.

9. The 9: Smith, Edoga, Biadasz, Martin, Steele, Smith, Farniok, Waletzko, Richards

10. Of those 9, Farniok and Waletzko worry me the most. Given a chance at OG, Ball could surprise some people, but doubt he makes it.

After spending some time on it, I'm much less worried and believe the offensive line has a good chance of being very good this year.
