On Tuesday it was reported that the Dallas Cowboys were bringing in former players La’el Collins and Damien Wilson for workouts with the team, with the potential of signing one or both to the team’s practice squad. A few hours after this it was reported that Dallas was signing Collins to the practice squad.
Somehow things changed less than 24 hours later. Here is a timeline of what unfolded and is still not quite clear at the time of this writing.
The first sign of something running contrary to what was initially known came from NFL Network’s Jane Slater. She reported that things were actually not yet official between Collins and the Cowboys.
While La’el Collins had what was described as a “good workout”. I’m told “we haven’t signed La’el” Could it still happen? Sure. Deal just isn’t done. Neither side can tell me why. Roster moves? Money? What I’ve been told is if he’s signed it’s for depth and not immediate impact— Jane Slater (@SlaterNFL) January 3, 2024
This immediately felt strange given that Tuesday’s report, the original of which also came from NFL Network, noted that the Collins signing was happening. Not that it was likely going to happen but that it was official.
For what it is worth, we are jumping back in time as far as things go here but beyond this running counter to initial reports, it also ran counter to what Collins himself said. Collins posted on his Instagram on Tuesday saying that he was home and several Cowboys players celebrated with him.
Back to Wednesday’s action. Slater’s report was followed by one from B/R’s Jordan Schultz who specified that no deal between the two was in place and that there was interest from at least one another team in Collins.
Sources to @BleacherReport: The #Cowboys and OT La’el Collins have not reached a deal as of this morning - contrary to other reports - and there are other teams who remain in the mix for his services.— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) January 3, 2024

Around this time Mike McCarthy was at the podium for his Wednesday press conference so he was obviously asked about the situation. He noted that the team and Collins are still working through things.
Former Cowboys OT La’el Collins has visited both Buffalo and Dallas as free agent is still sorting through interest before finalizing decision, a person familiar with matter said. “We’re still working through a bunch of stuff.” Coach Mike McCarthy indicated he expects clarity on…— Michael Gehlken (@GehlkenNFL) January 3, 2024
That is where things stand at the moment. Time will tell if Collins does officially join the Cowboys or not.
