It was a mixed-bag for the Cowboys QB, but his determination wins out.

If you think that the problems surrounding Dak Prescott are suddenly solved, it would be wise to think again. Prescott’s statistical line is not one that will likely win a lot of football games over time. He only threw for 160 yards, and 64 of that came on one play. There was a stretch in the middle of the game where things bogged down, it wasn’t all Prescott’s fault, but still, the Cowboys offense is surely still a work in progress. As is Prescott.

Even so, we’re giving the game ball to Prescott for a few reasons. One was answering the challenge early when he threw a perfect strike to Tavon Austin for a 64-yard TD that opened the scoring. That one play let the Giants know that last week’s Cowboys offense was history, and that they would challenge the defense deep. Prescott tried a couple of more long passes, one that could have been caught by Michael Gallup, that showed he knew he couldn’t continue what he was doing last week. He had to take some shots downfield if for no other reason than keeping the defense honest.

Second, Prescott was very decisive in his reads and delivered some accurate passes, except when he was under pressure. Yes, he missed a wide-open Rico Gathers in the endzone while backpedaling from pressure, but when presented with a decent pocket he made his reads quickly and delivered the ball accurately. He was throwing darts most of the game and connected at a 64% clip, not bad.

Third, he used his legs in a smarter way. The obvious was his read-options that were very potent. He ended up with 45 yards rushing on seven carries, that’s a very nice 6.4 yards per carry average. But there was another subtle part of using his legs, as in the times he didn’t use them. Prescott looked much more comfortable in the pocket and didn’t bail out quickly nearly as much as he did last week. Yes, the Giants were getting nowhere the amount of pressure the Panthers did, but Prescott looked steady and comfortable staying in the pocket instead of the jittery display he put on last week.

Finally, no turnovers. Prescott got away with a couple of passes that could have been possible interceptions, but on the night he had no fumbles and no interceptions. That is huge when the Cowboys defense is playing the way it is right now. If the offense is efficient, puts some points on the board and doesn’t turn the ball over, the defense is taking care of the rest.

As noted at the top of this article, Prescott hasn’t totally turned the corner based on this one game. It would be nice if he could at lest get over 200 yards passing on a regular basis. Teams are still packing the box so he needs to continue to take shots deep and make teams pay. There is still work to be done. Also, the defense really won this game, and they could easily be given the game ball. Maybe the duo of Rod Marinelli and Kris Richard deserve it for the combination of blitzes and tight coverage in the secondary.

In the end, I’m giving it to Dak Prescott. Not because he turned into Aaron Rodgers, but because he did the things he needed to do to get the Cowboys a win. After all the pressure he faced during the week, he didn’t fold or complain. He noted that he needed to play better, then he did. He’ll still face doubts until he starts stringing together some solid performances, but for this week... kudos Dak.

Now that’s more like it! Which five plays were the most important?

The Cowboys offense rebounded in a big way, scoring enough points to enjoy a defense that was stout for roughly 3.75 quarters of the game. In the end, Dallas walked out with a 20-13 win that put them in first place in the NFC East after both Philadelphia and Washington lost earlier in the day. It was a convincing win despite the close score, and here are five plays that defined the game.

Dak bombs it to Tavon Austin for a 64-yard touchdown

The Cowboys received the opening kickoff and sent out an offense that needed to make a statement. Their first play was a nine-yard pass to Allen Hurns, and then Ezekiel Elliott ran two yards for a first down. Just moving the chains was a good sign, but then Dak Prescott went back on first and ten and delivered this beautiful bomb to a streaking Tavon Austin, who caught it and then proceeded to smoke Janoris Jenkins on his way to an electrifying touchdown to open the game.

Dak keeps it on the option for a big first down run

After the defense got the ball back on a punt, Dak and the offense went back onto the field looking to keep moving the ball. It started with a 12-yard pass to Deonte Thompson, and then Zeke busted off a 19-yard run. Then, there was a very inventive reverse play where Zeke flipped it to Tavon and he picked up a 15-yard run.

The next play helped set a tone for Prescott on the evening of using his legs when the team ran a zone read-option. The defensive end crashed hard on the handoff to Zeke, so Dak kept it and ran outside for another 15 yards and the first four plays of this drive had resulted in 61 yards. The drive ended up with just a field goal, but it was still very promising to have two consecutive scoring drives.

DeMarcus Lawrence sacks Eli Manning, kills drive

Near the end of the first half, Eli Manning and the Giants offense started to move the chains. With just under a minute left, Saquon Barkley picked up a first down at about midfield and it looked like the Giants might be able to go down and score before heading to the locker room.

That’s when the Tank decided to step in. After the Giants went no-huddle, Lawrence looped to the inside of the offensive line and burst through a wide open hole to bring Manning down. New York had to use a timeout and the nine-yard loss killed the drive, making them punt two plays later before heading to halftime scoreless.

Damien Wilson with the strip sack, and Taco scoops up the ball

After Lawrence’s sack killed a promising drive for the Giants before halftime, New York entered the second half trying to do something offensively. On second and ten from their own 40-yard line, on the opening drive of the half, Damien Wilson penetrated through the line and sacked Manning, who fumbled the ball as he went to the ground. Taco Charlton, who had picked up a sack earlier, was already swinging around the outside edge and was right there to pounce on the ball. The Cowboys recovered the ball at the Giants’ own 27-yard line.

It was a huge momentum boost for Dallas, as their defense went right in and took the ball away from Eli, setting their offense up in great position. The Cowboys managed just three points out of it, but that made the score 13-0 and seemed to suck the life out of the Giants for most of the rest of the game.

Zeke runs in six yards for a touchdown

The Cowboys offense started with the ball at their own 18-yard line with just over 14 minutes in the fourth quarter, and they executed a long, methodical drive that chewed up the clock. At one point, Ezekiel Elliott had a great 19-yard run that saw him bounce off defenders and had fans on their feet. Dak also had a really good rush on an option keeper that set up a third and two play where Zeke ran it in for a touchdown.

He got hit early, but the second effort and sudden burst got him home to the endzone to make it a 20-3 score. The Giants would then make a comeback effort that fell short, but this touchdown from Elliott after eating so much clock extended the lead so much that any comeback effort was simply too-little, too-late, and Dallas picked up their first win of the season.

Victory!

The Dallas Cowboys won for the first time in 2018 on Sunday night. It was glorious.

I’ve got a bit of a tradition following Cowboys wins, it’s called Victory Polo Monday. The rules are simple. All you have to do is wear a Cowboys polo, or really anything you want. VPM is a state of mind, a celebratory one, and it’s one that we all share. That’s the stuff.

What stuff went into victory numero uno, though? Who won besides the Cowboys? Who lost? What else? There’s else? There’s always else.

Here are BTB’s five winners, five losers, and all the else from Week 2’s victory over the Giants.

Winner: Those aboard the Tavon Austin hype train

There aren’t a lot of us, perhaps only dozens, but there have been people believing that Tavon Austin would be a thing in 2018. Yes, the Tavon Austin drafted in 2013. Early on Sunday, our own Dave Halprin predicted Austin would be the X-factor that swayed the game.

The Cowboys told us way back when that Tavon would be a “web back” for them, and we spent forever trying to figure out what that meant. We almost spent as long trying to decipher that term as the New York Giants did trying to catch him on his first catch at AT&T Stadium.

Is Tavon going to lead the league in receiving? <s>Duh</s> Obviously not. Tavon Austin does give the Cowboys something they really need, though. What’s that? Watch the video again, man. He gives them a playmaker, someone really fast, a person who can outrun the other team’s players. Pick any one of those and we can party.

There are those that have suggested Dallas utilize Austin the way that the Kansas City Chiefs do Tyreek Hill. While this connection wasn’t exactly Pat Mahomes it was one that he would be proud of. Congratulations on being our first winner, Tavon hypers.

Winner: THE HOT BOYZ

The Dallas Cowboys had six sacks on Sunday night. They are in search of their sixth Super Bowl. Is that a coincidence? I THINK NOT.

Look, sacking Eli Manning six times doesn’t necessarily indicate that we’re going to be playing in Atlanta this February, but it definitely bodes well. Taco Charlton dubbed the Cowboys defensive line (and friends) the “Hot Boyz” during training camp, and these dudes are scorching right now.

The thing though is that basically as soon as that happened the Cowboys decided that all of those things that worked for them shouldn’t be done anymore. Scott Linehan seriously took his foot off of the gas, and while the offense did grind out the game-winning touchdown at the end that’s not a strategy that is going to work week in and week out in the NFL.

It’s a little bewildering when you look back and realize that the Cowboys spent so much time trying to develop him at safety when he just fits at corner. Byron is kind of awesome at this.

Much praise has been given to the defensive line (see above), but the Cowboys secondary is low-key ballin out, too. Byron is a big reason why. Also shout out to Kris Richard because, well, obligatory and what not.

It’s still early on in the season and there is definitely a level of rust on the Cowboys, and the rest of the NFL for that matter. This is where those that believe in it will argue that playing in the preseason holds some merit.

We saw the Cowboys take six penalties on Sunday night, for 47 yards. The Giants only had three (24), and that’s not good. Penalties can be drive killers, and in fact they killed a Cowboys drive twice on back-to-back occasions in unique fashion.
