Now that things have sunk in a little, what do you truly think of the draft haul?

The NFL Draft is a beautiful thing. In a blink of an eye, it can throw months worth of draft research into the trash as you realize how small you are in the real world when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys front office. I learned this the hard way back in 2012 when I spent hours trying to decide who the team was more likely to pick - edge rusher Melvin Ingram or guard David DeCastro. The team threw us all a curve ball when they traded up for Morris Claiborne and just like that - my top 50 players no longer had relevance. Those were good times.

You’d think such a lesson learned would prepare me to not get my hopes up, but no - I get lulled into believing the Cowboys are going to pick my top guys because I’m a sucker. In all fairness, the three-year streak of Zack Martin, Byron Jones, and Ezekiel Elliott built up my confidence as I was able to correctly predict those selections. And although I have no definitive proof - I strongly feel my pick of Takkarist McKinley would have been the team’s 2017 choice if the Atlanta Falcons hadn’t moved up ahead of them in the draft.

So a new streak was started that year - one where I am whiffing on correctly picking the team’s first selection of the draft. It carried on the next season when Leighton Vander Esch was selected. Vander Esch was a great player that we spoke highly of quite a bit leading up to the draft, but he just wasn’t the top player for many of us. It felt like a reach. Of course, it didn’t take very long for us to realize the Cowboys knew what they were doing the whole time. Despite being selected 19th overall, Vander Esch has emerged as one of the top five players in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The reality is - the Cowboys draft well. Whether we recognize it right away or not doesn’t change the fact that when the dust settles, there is a great chance they’ll end up with a really good football player. Trust has been earned. So when they once again select a player who’s not the player I wanted, I come quickly come to terms with the idea that I’m mistaken. So, like it or not like it, here are my initial assessments of all eight of the Cowboys draft picks from the 2019 NFL Draft.

Pick 58 - Trysten Hill, DT

Buzz started generating early Friday morning that the Cowboys loved Hill and he was likely to be the pick if he made it to 58. This exact sorta thing happened last year with Vander Esch so we had a little bit of time to prepare ourselves. How this kind of stuff leaks out the day of the draft is baffling and seems like it could be detrimental should another team catch wind and jump ahead of you. The Cowboys may want to do a better job keeping their secrets under wraps. So with the hype of Hill already in full swing, I made a plea to the organization, but something tells me they weren’t listening.

I have no problem with Hill the player. The Cowboys have traits they look for and Hill matches that to a tee. The get-off, the motor, the pass-rushing presence who can also stuff the run - he’s got it. The perplexing thing about Hill is despite his talent, the coaching staff at Central Florida chose to not start him last season. The Cowboys did their homework and Rod Marinelli ended up developing a close relationship with Hill. This pick is not just about the athletic upside or the need they have on the inside of the defensive line. I mean, those things are important, but the icing on the cake was what the team felt about the person. When you take all of this into account, it’s easy to see why the team loved Hill so much.

Pick 90 - Connor McGovern, G

This pick caught a lot of fans off guard. There were so many great choices available and it was surprising that they would choose a player at a position where they are strong. Last week in our follow the money piece, we identified an offensive lineman as a surprise third-round pick. We made our best guess at a talented lineman that might slip through the cracks and that choice was Max Scharping who was selected 55th overall. The team actually went with Connor McGovern who turned out to be that crack-slipper for the Cowboys front office.

McGovern was a four-year starter at Penn State that featured two of the top running backs taken in the draft over the last two years (Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders). He’s a smart player who is run blocking stud. He’s athletic, he plays with good leverage, and he’s got a little bit of nasty the team loves on their OL. The position flex also is big and opens up some doors for the team going forward. Losing La’el Collins in free agency next season suddenly isn’t a big concern. If Travis Frederick suffers a setback, the team will be ready. The team has had a great amount of success when their offensive line dominates and this puts them one step closer to doing just that. It’s not sexy, but it’s super smart.

Pick 128 - Tony Pollard, RB

Memphis running back Tony Pollard was an official pre-draft visit, so it wasn’t surprising that the team selected him. However, it was surprising that they took him so early. There was a run on running backs right before the Cowboys picked so maybe they got nervous, but this pick looked like a panic move.

Even more unsettling was the notion that the team appeared to mess up the order of in which they should’ve selected their fourth-round picks. From the war room camera, there was an lively discussion going on right before they picked. It felt as if they were debating who they should pick first, hoping they could get guys they wanted with both picks. They opted to go with Pollard first, but wasn’t able to get the other guy they wanted at 136. That forced them into plan B. You might want to look away if you’re a John Cominsky fan as this could sting a bit.

Cowboys got jumped for Cominsky and decided to trade back
— KD Drummond (@KDDrummondNFL) April 27, 2019

If the Cowboys went Cominsky first, there’s a great chance they get both the players they want.

Pollard is a good player and he’s dynamic enough to offer the offense a little excitement with his touches, but it’s hard to get too worked up about this type of player when we’ve witnessed the team not utilize them to their full potential. We’ve all been duped before when it come to players like Lance Dunbar or even last year with Tavon Austin, so we’ll believe it when we see it, but maybe the Kellen Moore era will present some new opportunities.

Pick 158 - Michael Jackson, CB

While I was still stewing over losing out on Cominsky, the Cowboys adjusted to this misstep pretty well. Rather than settling, they moved back and got an extra pick. And then they turned that pick into yet another pick. All in all, the compensatory pick courtesy of Anthony Hitchens yielded them three players. And the team put them to good use.

At pick 158, the Cowboys got themselves a long, physical corner with Miami’s Michael Jackson. This is the prototypical corner that Kris Richard looks for. He loves to press off the line and is very pesky in coverage. He’s got good speed to stay with his man, plays with a lot of aggression, and will sell out to make the tackle. But my favorite thing about him is how he gets his head turned around to make a play on the ball. He’s just a very good cover corner.

This is a really good depth pick for Dallas this late in the draft. With Anthony Brown on the last year of his deal, Jackson could step in and have a bigger role on this team in 2020.

Pick 165 -Joe Jackson, DE

For a lot of Cowboys fans there was a huge sigh of relief when edge rusher Jaylon Ferguson was selected by some other team. The NCAA’s all time leader in sacks just didn’t grow on a lot of us, but word on the street was that the Cowboys liked him a lot. The knock on Ferguson had to do with his traits, or lack thereof. He doesn’t bend or explode off the ball, yet his production was astounding. And that is what the Cowboys get with Miami’s Joe Jackson, albeit a discounted version.

The team has been throwing draft resources at the defensive end position every year since the departure of DeMarcus Ware and even though it’s a crowded house, it didn’t deter them from doing it again this year. Like Ferguson, Jackson just isn’t colored with a lot of appealing pass rushing traits, but his effectiveness at this point in his development is intriguing in it’s own right. Just how good can he be if he can’t refine his pass rushing technique?

Last month we mentioned that the Cowboys two starting edge rushers, DeMarcus Lawrence and Robert Quinn, both finished in the top four in terms of win percentage last season. It looks like they now have another edge rusher that wins at a high rate.

Joe Jackson had the highest pass-rush win percentage among qualified ACC Edge defenders this season. He totaled 56 pressures on only 286 pass rush snaps. pic.twitter.com/gTIP00OOkD
— PFF Draft (@PFF_College) March 10, 2019

Pick 213 - Donovan Wilson, S

The Cowboys had so many opportunities to get a good safety in this draft, but time and time again, they passed. On one hand, you have to credit their discipline to favor talent over need as they continued to pluck good players off the board. But on the other hand, how are they ever going to improve the safety position? And for that reason, it leaves many of us unsatisfied that Wilson was the best they could come up with at safety.

But if you can accept the fact that there will be no new upgrade at the top of the depth chart and just focus on depth, the Wilson pick has way more appeal. There is little hope that he’ll give the team something better than what they already have. He’s not athletic enough to be a strong safety, and his 199 lb. frame isn’t optimal to be a punishing strong safety.

Despite the lack of upside, Wilson has the traits to having a fighting shot at making the roster. Whether his body can handle it or not, he’s going to give the effort and has the physical nature to hit hard. And he’ll be better in coverage than Kavon Frazier, who he’s likely to replace in 2020. Solid pick.

Pick 218 - Mike Weber, RB

Another running back? What’s going on here? The Cowboys had two Day 3 running back prospects in for pre-draft visits and I’ll be doggone it if they didn’t take them both.

Ohio State’s Mike Weber was a guy that we had mocked to the Cowboys in the fifth round so getting him a round later works for me. And it doesn’t really matter that Pollard was already drafted. The Cowboys really don’t have any running backs behind Zeke so both these guys can have a role on the team. Pollard would have a different role, where Weber is a more well-rounded running back that could actually fill in as the lead back should Elliott be unavailable. Like Pollard, Weber’s vision is really good, but he attacks more within the tackles.

The team knows what they want for their offense. Damien Harris was brought in because he’s sort of a poor man’s Zeke. He’s very good at a lot of different things. Well, Weber is a poor man’s Harris. Sure, it’s another level down from the original, but the team now has a viable backup running back on a cheap four-year deal.

One of the first pieces we wrote in the aftermath of the Cowboys divisional playoff loss was how all four of the conference championship teams had success utilizing multiple running backs in contrast to the Cowboys relying too heavily on Zeke. So really, I should be much happier about these new toys than I am leading on.

Pick 241 - Jalen Jelks, DE

It’s hard to have too much of an opinion about a seventh-round draft pick, but this move was puzzling. The Cowboys defensive end position is extremely crowded and now they bring in a player who is not exactly athletic? What are they trying to do here exactly? Answer: throw darts.

Jelks selection was a preemptive priority free agent signing that they knew wasn’t likely to happen had they waited until after the draft. I mean, what edge rusher is going to want to show up to Dallas and fight for a roster spot with all this surplus of depth already on the roster? By drafting him, he’s not given the choice. And when you look at some of the nice adds they picked up as undrafted free agents, it certainly makes a lot more sense with how they approached this.

With Jelks they have a long defender that does a great job utilizing his size. He processes well and his reaction skills is where he makes his money. The limitations athletically doesn’t paint a promising picture, but we’ll let camp battles sort that all out.

There were times when I felt like the Cowboys were reaching, but I think subconsciously my mind wasn’t seeing the effects of not having a first-round pick. When you take a step back and lay it all on the table, it looks like a much more impressive draft haul.

The Cowboys draft was interesting and even unpredictable at times. What do the scouting reports say about the haul?

The NFL Draft is always entertaining and full of surprises as we spend ample hours scouting players we think the Cowboys like, only to find that they had a different plan all along.

This year, the Cowboys patiently waited through almost two whole rounds before they got the chance to add talent to the roster. Dallas even made some trades on the back end to turn six selections into eight on day three. Overall, here’s a quick recap of their 2019 draft class:

Why it makes sense: In year’s past, it has been hard to get Rod Marinelli to really fight for a prospect. He’s a great coach and is confident in his ability to get the best out of anyone, Antwaun Woods is the latest example.

Trysten Hill possesses the exact skill set Marinelli requires at the 3-technique in his scheme. Hill mentioned in his call-in to the Draft Show that he spoke to coach Marinelli just about every few days in his draft process. The Cowboys did a lot of homework on Hill, who had some maturity concerns but the fit is outstanding. His elite burst off the snap is what gives him a great opportunity to break the starting lineup. Dallas needed defensive tackle help and they just got younger and more explosive at the position.

Biggest Concern: Coachability/ Maturity

Trysten Hill needs to shake his pre-draft label of being hard to coach especially considering who he’s now being paired with.

Marinelli is a legendary defensive line guy but he doesn’t tolerate anything but maximum effort and expects players to bring what they learn to the field, no exceptions. Hill needs to look no further than the frustrated Taco Charlton for example. Charlton has struggled to refine his technique and develop a pass rush plan which is the root cause of his frustrations. Rod Marinelli loves his players but he’s going to play the guys that hustle to the ball and perform, the object is winning, period. Hill has to soak up everything and hit the ground running because his impact potential is off the charts. Hill needs to work on every aspect of his technique and develop a great plan of attack to be successful in the NFL.

Why it makes sense: Right off the bat, it’s hard to argue with a front office that has a track record like the Cowboys do in picking offensive linemen. The Cowboys are looking at the big picture here as La’el Collins’ contract expires after the 2019 season. There are several depth players on the offensive line that are also on short-term deals. If the plan is to make Connor Williams a right tackle in the future, it makes sense to keep a strength as strong as ever with the addition of McGovern. The Cowboys are getting a player that can contribute immediately but doesn’t have to, his versatility and agility are two traits that will serve well in this offensive scheme.

McGovern is a better run-blocker than pass-blocker at the moment. He can sometimes get out of balance and use poor hand technique when setting up for pass blocking. Marc Colombo will need to work on technique issues and get them refined.

Why it makes sense: This is a guy that Marinelli loves, a lunch-pail guy that makes up for his deficiencies with relentless effort. Jackson was a very productive player at “The U” and will be a solid addition to a crowded Cowboys line rotation. He doesn’t have long speed but his initial quickness is where it needs to be, the motor is great, and he’s just a complete overachiever.

Biggest Concern: Athleticism

Jackson’s length is good but he doesn’t use it well and he’s just not the best athlete. He does show some stiffness, he’s not very bendy, and struggles to rush with a plan. The Cowboys can get production out of him but they first must fix his hand placement. Without the athleticism needed to rush consistently, he’s most likely a rotational guy with a limited snap count.

The Cowboys used some trade-back magic to acquire some extra players.

What feels like forever ago, we found out that the Dallas Cowboys were getting a fourth-round compensatory pick thanks to Anthony Hitchens leaving for the Kansas City Chiefs last year.

Compensatory picks can be very valuable, nobody knows that better than the Dallas Cowboys. After they took Memphis running back Tony Pollard with their first fourth-rounder it was time to exercise their compensatory pick. The thing about it was, though, the Cowboys decided to trade back. It made watching the draft feel all the more anxious.

Amazingly though, the Cowboys then traded back again! They moved back twice as people screamed to take this or that player, but ultimately the Cowboys turned their moves into three nice players.

Cowboys Gave Up:

That’s a really solid way to turn a little bit of something into a whole lot of something. Dallas now has a corner and safety for Kris Richard to work with plus a more legitimate primary backup option for Ezekiel Elliott (one he knows well) considering Tony Pollard might be more of a specialty player.

Dallas was staring a new starting safety in the face at pick number 58, but instead of taking Juan Thornhill or Taylor Rapp, they went with Trysten Hill. This keeps Jeff Heath more firmly in the rotation, even though the Cowboys also signed George Iloka not too long ago.

Obviously the Cowboys still drafted a safety in Donovan Wilson, but he’s unlikely to threaten Heath’s status on defense. Overall it was a good weekend for Jeff.

Winner: Rod Marinelli

The Cowboys finally gave Rod Marinelli a legitimate defensive tackle to work with. Good for them.

We’ve seen Rod go at it with guys like Jason Hatcher, Henry Melton, Stephen Paea, and even though he played nicely last season, Antwaun Woods. Trysten Hill is the first time they’ve given him somebody that he was in love with to make the middle of his defensive line work.

It’s no secret that Rod Marinelli has considered retirement before. Getting the guys he likes sure has to make sticking around all the more easy.

Winner: The Cowboys backfield in general

Dallas has tried to go at it in the backfield outside of their primary ballcarrier with all sorts of options in recent memory. Behind Ezekiel Elliott they didn’t really have much, but do you need much when you have Zeke?

With the additions of Tony Pollard and Zeke’s former teammate Mike Weber, Dallas now has options back there. They’ve also tried to get cute with things here and use both Ryan Switzer and Tavon Austin in the backfield, with someone like Pollard in tow they no longer have to experiment like that. That also makes Austin a winner to a degree.

Weber is a more likely true “backup” to Zeke with Pollard serving as a specialty weapon. So much of what he’ll be able to contribute is limited by what Kellen Moore is able to do with him, but overall this helps everybody have more defined roles.

Winner: The offensive line both now and in the future

So much has happened that the Connor McGovern pick feels like forever ago. In reality, the Cowboys have a brand new guard with center flexibility to help out their current all-world group. Strengthening your strength is a good idea.

What’s more is the Cowboys could conceivably lose La’el Collins in free agency next year. If they already are planning on moving Connor Williams out to right tackle then and replacing him with their new Connor at left guard, good for them on having that foresight.

Winner: Jason Witten and the rest of the tight ends

They started with six picks and ended with eight, but the Dallas Cowboys did not take a single tight end during the 2019 NFL Draft. They clearly believe in what they have on their roster at the moment.

Obviously what they have is a bunch of “um... okay” especially since Jason Witten is back. Sure, Blake Jarwin has some potential and people are excited to see how Dalton Schultz will do in year two, but what about the future? Do we really feel like a future star is on the team currently?

This is the riskiest decision that they made.

Loser: Taco Charlton

The Dallas Cowboys drafted two defensive ends in Joe Jackson and Jalen Jelks. This gives them quite the crowd at the position:

DeMarcus Lawrence

Joe Jackson

Jalen Jelks

Of course, Dallas still has Randy Gregory and if he plays at all that will be a huge bonus. To be fair, Jelks was a seventh-round pick so it’s not like he absolutely has to make the roster, but the point is there are a lot of people and Taco Charlton is barely somewhere in the middle of the group.

2019 is going to be an important year for Charlton. He’s entering his third season and is going to be expected to make a jump. In his defense though, how can he? There are talented defensive ends to the point that it will be hard to get on the field consistently.

Now there are even more.

Loser: Sanjay Lal

While Rod Marinelli got his guy and Kris Richard got some new toys (granted not the ones he probably really wanted), Sanjay Lal didn’t get any new receivers. Boo.

Of course, Lal technically got Amari Cooper with a pick that belonged to the Cowboys in this class, but he didn’t get any over the course of the last three days. Dallas does have a promising trio in Cooper, Michael Gallup, and Randall Cobb, but the future of the slot is so unknown. This could have been the time to fix that.

Loser: La’el Collins... depending on how you define things

With the drafting of McGovern the future of the Cowboys’ offensive line is all the more stable. You know that, duh. We just talked about it.

That kind of means that the Cowboys are planning on moving on from Collins next offseason, or at least preparing to. To be fair the only reason that they would do this is if he got paid by someone else, so it’s not really that Collins is a loser it’s just that this situation could help spell the end of his time in Dallas.

Oh well.

Loser: Darius Jackson

With the Cowboys drafting both Tony Pollard and Mike Weber, not to mention the fact that they brought back fullback Jamize Olawale, it’s safe to say that Jackson’s days in Dallas are numbered.

Radius, as he’s affectionately known, has been a fan favorite of many. He’s had a long road in the NFL as the Cowboys moved on from him and he somehow ended back with them.

The reality now is that there is just too much competition. Given that the Cowboys will likely go deep somewhere else they are probably not going to carry four running backs. Fare thee well, old friend.

Loser: The obvious position needs

Look, the Cowboys got answers at defensive tackle and running back throughout the draft, but they are basically in the same spot now that they were on Monday at both safety and tight end.

These are important positions (there are no unimportant ones to be fair). The Cowboys are going to be depending on Jason Witten’s return plus Kris Richard’s continued development of their fun bunch at safety. For a team that has aspirations of at least finishing in the NFL’s final four, that’s an awfully large roll of the dice.

Hopefully the plan works.

Fourth rounder Tony Pollard may have an interesting role. | Photo by Rob Foldy/Getty Images

A couple of trades brought some extra late-round picks. But those guys have no guarantees.

The Dallas Cowboys went into day three of the 2019 NFL Draft with four picks - and came out with six players thanks to a pair of trades back. Of course, the later players are taken, the harder it is for them to stick with an NFL team. These guys are facing real fights to make the roster. Here is a quick look at where they might fit and what chances they might have.

Tony Pollard, RB, Memphis (pick 128)

The fourth round is still something of a premium spot, so Pollard has a good chance of making the roster. Even more in his favor: The Cowboys are really short on depth at his position, with only Darius Jackson and Jordan Chunn currently backing up Ezekiel Elliott (of course that changed later in the draft). It seems a safe bet that Pollard will keep Chunn from making the roster (since you can’t say he was ever on it to begin with).

But Pollard may have some other implications, because he looks very much like someone who can fill the Tavon Austin role in addition to providing depth at running back. And it can be argued he really isn’t a three down back - at least in the Dallas offense as we have come to know it. During the draft coverage from DallasCowboys.com, Pollard was portrayed as being a true Kellen Moore pick. That is an important thing to consider. Pollard could bring a new element to the scheme, which indicates that Moore is not just planning on making significant changes to how the offense is run, he is being empowered and given some tools to do so.

Given the injury history for Austin, Pollard also provides depth in the passing role, and he was used nearly as much as a receiver as a runner in college (139 carries and 104 catches). It is reasonable to expect Moore to want to do the same thing with him, and it is possible he could have a bigger contribution as a receiver with a role in passing downs. That is if he is even active on game days, but it certainly offers some ideas how he may carve a niche for himself. It also means he may indirectly affect the receivers on the roster, since he could have a role as a receiver. That may well allow the team to slice one receiver off the 53-man roster, and get Pollard on the field.

Along with second-round pick Trysten Hill and third-rounder Connor McGovern, Pollard is just about assured he will make the team, and he has the advantage of there being something of a vacant spot to slide into, effectively replacing Rod Smith. But later in the day, things would get a bit more complicated at running back, as we will see.

Michael Jackson, CB, Miami (pick 158)

Once they had taken Pollard, the Cowboys traded back out of their fourth-round compensatory pick to get an extra selection, and would go on to do that again. That is something of an indication that they did not have any player they felt they really had to get with that pick at 136. It serves as a demarcation, making it pretty clear that none of the players taken after the fourth round should take anything for granted.

Having said that, Michael Jackson may have a shot as a defensive back with position flexibility. His main shot at making the roster would be to convince the staff to keep five corners. That may put him in competition with the safety group as well, both from the aspect of him possibly being able to play some safety, and that the team has to trade off corners and safeties in getting to the final mix for the roster.

For now, that means that Jackson is not really in competition with the top four corners on the roster, or with the top four safeties. He most likely, for lack of a better term, fighting to get one of a few “at large” spots. This is very similar to the situation with Pollard, where the wide receiver group can be impacted, but Jackson does not have a ready vacancy to try and slip in to. In the end, he may be a candidate to try and slip onto the practice squad - which is something that the remainder of the picks also face. And, just like at the running back position, the defensive back situation would have another element added as things went on.

Joe Jackson, DE, Miami (pick 165)

The obvious opportunity for really bad jokes about Michael Jackson’s name increased exponentially when the Cowboys drafted his teammate from the Hurricanes, Joe Jackson. It is to be expected that they have long had to deal with such juvenile humor, so at least they will be prepared.

Joe Jackson has been compared to Taco Charlton, which might work for or against him. It could mean they have a good idea of how they want to use him, or it might mean he will be basically redundant when the cuts come. With the current players Dallas has, Joe Jackson would likely be competing with Dorance Armstrong and perhaps Kerry Hyder for a seat in the defensive line room. (Charlton is not affected thanks to his first-rounder status.) Joe Jackson is definitely a long shot, as if his draft status didn’t tell you that already.

Oh, and in what became a theme for the late rounds, the Cowboys were not done with this particular position group.

Donovan Wilson, S, Texas A&M (pick 213)

No one was surprised when the Cowboys drafted a safety. There was a lot of consternation that they waited until the sixth round to do so. The team doesn’t care about what we want, of course.

Now Wilson will come in and have to vie with Kavon Frazier and perhaps free agent acquisition George Iloka, and as was outlined above, he also may be fighting for a defensive back spot with Michael Jackson. Dallas could carry from eight to ten DBs total, with nine perhaps the most likely number. That means something has to give. For both Wilson and MJ, their ability to contribute on special teams may be a major factor.

Mike Weber, RB. Ohio State (pick 218)

If there was a real surprise pick, it was Weber. Double-dipping at running back was not something a lot of people saw coming, but if you were listening to the coverage at DallasCowboys.com, some of the team there had an inkling this might be a direction the team could go. And Weber is not really in direct competition with Pollard. He is more clearly intended to be a backup for his old college teammate Elliott. As such, he is going to be challenging Darius Jackson, especially if the Cowboys elect to go light in the running back room the way they did in 2018.

He may have a really good chance of sticking on the roster, despite being a seventh-round selection. Darius Jackson was a sixth-rounder himself, so the two should be interchangeable in the minds of the staff. Assuming the team takes both into camp to sort things out, the preseason games are probably going to determine how this goes.

Jalen Jelks, EDGE, Oregon (pick 241)

You can never have too many pass rushers, which seems to be the motivation for what was the third “double dip” of the day. But you also can’t carry an unlimited number, so Jelks will be another competitor for Joe Jackson, Armstrong, and Hyder. The two rookies both have an uphill battle to make the roster, and it would not be surprising to see the team try to get both through waivers to sign to the practice squad when the final cutdown rolls around.

Dallas already had a pretty strong roster before the draft, with not many true holes to fill. Now there are some very intriguing camp battles to watch. All of the draftees should make it to camp with no problem, but getting out of it is a different story.

There’s going to be a lot of competition at the Cowboys defensive end position.

The Cowboys went into this draft seemingly set at their defensive end positions, with DeMarcus Lawrence and Robert Quinn as the primary starters with Taco Charlton, Dorance Armstrong Jr., and Kerry Hyder as depth.

Now they’ve added more competition. It started when Dallas took Miami defensive end Joe Jackson in the fifth round at 165th overall. But then the Cowboys took another defensive end in Jalen Jelks of Oregon. Jelks, taken in the seventh round at 241st overall, joins a suddenly crowded defensive end group in Dallas.

Jelks is one of the more intriguing edge rushers from this class, too, as he played out of position a lot in college. While the Ducks ran a 4-3 defense, it was very different from what the Cowboys run. Most notably, they routinely had Jelks line up as a 4-technique defensive end on early downs, which had Jelks going straight up against offensive tackles. On passing downs, Oregon usually moved Jelks inside to a 2-technique spot, which saw him going head on against guards.

The problem with this is that Jelks was listed at only 245 pounds in college, making him woefully undersized for those roles. As such, Jelks only put up 3.5 sacks in 2018 and seven sacks in 2017. But Jelks added some beef for the combine, where he measured in at 256 pounds. More interesting, though, is that Jelks stands at 6’5” with 34 5/8” arms, making him a very long, rangy edge rusher.

Jelks doesn’t seem to be overly athletic, but he’s relied on his great length to overcome any gaps in athleticism. When rushing the passer, he gets extension and knows how to use his length to get leverage on offensive linemen. When he has a good get off, Jelks can be nearly unstoppable. The issue is that Jelks’ biggest weakness seems to be his fundamentals; in other words, he’s inconsistent in coming off the line of scrimmage and doesn’t show good instincts when it comes to pass rush moves.

Much like Joe Jackson, Jelks is a bit of a developmental defensive end at this point. He needs to refine his fundamentals, but if he can do that, he can become a quality situational pass rusher off the edge. The reason Jelks fell further than Jackson is largely due to his playing out of position in college, so he wasn’t able to flash his potential as well as Jackson did.

Jelks should fit in well in Dallas, where he’ll be primarily working as a 5-technique defensive end coming off the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle. This will allow him to best utilize his length and strength. The question will be if Jelks can earn a roster spot over all the other defensive ends now on the Cowboys’ roster. If not, he could be an early candidate for the practice squad. Only time will tell, but Dallas got a player with a fairly high ceiling for a very low cost.

The Cowboys finally drafted a safety!

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t start the day with a sixth-round draft pick, but they finished the day with two of them thanks to a couple of trade backs. They used the first of those sixth-rounders to select Texas A&M safety Donovan Wilson with the 213th overall pick. We were all expecting the Cowboys to draft a safety, however we had no idea it wouldn’t be until the sixth round. Of course, the last time they took a safety this late (Xavier Woods) it turned out pretty good.

Wilson has good size at 6’0” and 199 pounds. He’s got a solid frame with 33.5 in. arms. He’s a tough guy who welcomes contact. He does a good job attacking up the field to defend the run or chase down screens. Wilson is a physical player who will square up and finish his tackles. He fires downhill and will lay the smackdown on ball carriers.

The Aggies safety has the football smarts to pick up on things quickly. His ball skills are decent and he has experience playing the nickel corner position. He’s got good short area quickness to play the slot or cover tight ends. He can diagnose routes quickly and he tracks the ball well. His ball production is modest as he has eight career interceptions. He’s touted as a good locker room guy that is a natural leader, but also brings with him a nastiness.

Wilson is a little out of control at times as he needs to play more controlled. He’s an aggressive player, but there were several times where he got flagged for targeting. His pursuit angles are lacking and he’s not a fluid mover. Changing directions will be a problem and he lacks the burst to close on throws. He also doesn’t have the long speed to be the last line of defense.

While he has some liabilities in coverage, he offers up some good attributes that will help him play down low. It’s going to be tough for him to earn snaps on defense, but he should have an opportunity to contribute on special teams.

The Cowboys need safety help not only at the top of the depth chart, but down the line. Jeff Heath, Kavon Frazier, and recently acquired George Iloka will all be unrestricted free agents next season. Wilson will have a shot to add some depth to this position group for the future.
