Coach spoke with the media today.

The Cowboys now turn their attention to the Eagles with their faint hopes at a playoff spot still alive. Coach Mike McCarthy talked about that and more in today’s press conference. (All answers are paraphrased and not actual quotes).

Balancing the holidays

This is a big week for the Dallas Cowboys on the field, but it is also the holiday season and Friday marks Christmas Day. Mike McCarthy said that early in his head coaching career he learned it was important for everybody to be home for Christmas so the Cowboys have adjusted their schedule to accommodate that. They will not practice on Friday, Christmas, and will go longer on Saturday.

Policy on coaching opportunities

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has seen his name pop up in connection to the head coach opening at his alma mater, Boise State. Mike McCarthy said that you talk about these things when the time comes and handle those things on an individual basis because they are usually unique to the individual.

Injuries

McCarthy noted that Leighton Vander Esch will not practice on Wednesday and he doesn’t see him playing this week. He added that Ezekiel Elliott and Michael Gallup will both be limited and that he didn’t see anything holding Gallup back from playing this week. He also added that Antwaun Woods will not practice.

Jalen Hurts

The Cowboys will face rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts on Sunday and McCarthy expressed great admiration for him. He noted that Hurts has been able to accomplish things on the run and as a passer and that you have to be impressed with his productivity through the last couple of games. He also noted that he’s done well with the vertical ball.

Zack Martin

McCarthy noted that he doesn’t see Zack Martin “making it” this week but that he is still part of the process that is happening every week. He is in meetings and participating in everything.

Xavier Woods

The head coach noted it will be “a challenge” for Woods to go this week. He said the safety will not practice on Wednesday.

No Pro Bowl players

Asked about the Cowboys not having any Pro Bowl players on their roster McCarthy noted that in his experience team success has certainly gone a long way at making it. He noted that the Cowboys lack of success early on in the season made matters difficult.

McCarthy added that humility has been a large part of this season and that he thinks a lot of good things can come out of humility patches throughout a journey.

Rookie class

McCarthy gave some love to the rookie class and said that they have “hit the target” in the month of December. He noted it is important for rookies to develop due to games getting more and more important and that he is very pleased with the draft class and undrafted class. He noted that Justin Hamilton and Neville Gallimore are improving each week and that even the UDFA class is helping especially on special teams.

Dak Prescott

Asked for an update on Dak Prescott, McCarthy said the quarterback is doing very well. He said all of the guys on IR tend to be in the training room at the same time on a daily basis. He noted that Dak is very positive, upbeat, and is attacking his rehab.

Asked if Dak is in the quarterback room McCarthy said that Dak is around those guys, but that his primary focus is on rehab.

It may be too late, but chance has favored Dallas lately, and so has some of their performance.

After hitting the depths of despair over how badly the Dallas Cowboys have played, fans and media alike suddenly have some real positives to consider. With their surprisingly good 41-33 win over the San Francisco 49ers, they now have the first winning streak of this long and sometimes painful season. This is not to say that the team has fixed all, or even most, of its problems. We still are torn between clinging to the extremely slim chances of making the playoffs and fully supporting Team Tank. No matter which side of that conundrum you fall, you must admit that Dallas has improved as a team. As always, there are things we can take away from the games.

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers

This is the most important single factor in having back-to-back victories. Before their game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cowboys were -13 in turnover margin. Now, with a plus three in that contest and four more added against the Niners, they have gotten to -6. It still puts them too close to the bottom of the league, but the improvement has been drastic, and it is not hard to argue they could have lost both games without the takeaways. Just as importantly, Dallas did not lose a fumble or interception in either of those games. There were some close calls, but things have decidedly gone their way for a change.

Getting takeaways and not giving the ball up is always good. If you can do that reliably, you will win a lot of games.

It just isn’t reliable at all, however. There is always an element of chance involved. On the first fumble lost by the 49ers, Dorance Armstrong managed to keep Richie James on top of him while he was tackling, which meant that when he pulled the ball out, it was still live. That is hard to do. And the second one was a very close call for the officials. They had to judge whether Nick Mullens was in the act of throwing the ball when DeMarcus Lawrence knocked it loose. The replay showed just how close that decision was. If we are being honest, there are some more established quarterbacks who would have gotten that call. But Mullens doesn’t have the reputation of a Tom Brady, just to pick a name totally and completely at random, and he turned the ball over.

The two interceptions were more a matter of Donovan Wilson and Anthony Brown making good reads and good plays, especially Wilson’s. Which segues nicely into the second lesson.

Getting healthy helps

For perhaps the first time all season, the Cowboys were at full strength in the secondary. Wilson, Brown, Chodobe Awuzie, and Trevon Diggs all have missed time, and were finally on the field together with Xavier Woods, plus Jourdan Lewis had a very good game when he was called on. It showed, although Mullens was still able to pass for 308 yards and sustain long scoring drives. Still, things are looking up - maybe. Woods had to leave the game with a chest injury, and his status for the upcoming divisional battle with the Philadelphia Eagles remains unknown.

Injuries have been the overriding story for the Cowboys this year. It seems more than just coincidence that as they see a little bit better health, they are finally having more success.

They need to feed someone else

This was the best game of Tony Pollard’s career, and it was certainly due to him starting in the absence of Ezekiel Elliott, who was out with an injury for the first time since being drafted. Call it a silver lining for what would normally be looked at as a detriment. It raises a real question about who is the best option for the team. There is absolutely a valid argument to be made that Pollard has been underutilized.

Given Elliott’s injury and very high mileage, the team needs to think strategically. It may be wiser to keep him out, perhaps for the remainder of the regular season, to ensure his calf is fully healed and not risk aggravating things. He certainly wants to get on the field, but the staff must make the decision in light of both the medical evaluation and what is best in the long run. It is still highly doubtful that the Cowboys can make the playoffs given the situation and the remaining schedule of the division-leading Washington Football Team, which just has to win one of their two remaining games. Those are against the 4-10 Carolina Panthers and the 4-9-1 Eagles, so the odds are in their favor. If everything were to align perfectly and Dallas does sneak into the playoffs, then Elliott could be reevaluated. In any case, they still need to get Pollard more touches, because good things tend to happen when they do.

The red zone was finally friendly territory for the offense

Thanks to those short fields on the takeaways, the Cowboys had three trips to the red zone and they scored touchdowns on all of them. That is certainly a change. Time and time again this year we have seen them stall out and have to settle for a field goal attempt. Even in the win over the Bengals, they just went two for four in the red zone. It was also encouraging to see that two of the touchdowns against San Francisco were on passes. Andy Dalton has had his struggles in filling in for Dak Prescott, but seems to be improving in some important areas. Few are more important than getting touchdowns instead of field goals when the team gets down close.

Now for the negatives

Winning makes things better, but there are still problem areas for Dallas. The run defense, while much better when they were defending the red zone, still allowed 150 yards on the ground to go with that good day passing from Mullens. Both Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. had strong days.

The offense had trouble sustaining drives, only converting 40% of their third downs and having three three-and-outs, including two in the second half when the 49ers twice tied the score. One of the touchdowns they scored only came because of a great scramble drill throw for the longest play of the day for the Cowboys, the 45-yard completion to CeeDee Lamb that set up the Dalton Schultz touchdown catch on the next play. The only reason that the Cowboys won this game while just totaling 291 yards was the field position. Which leaves a high note to finish on.

Winning the battle of the hidden yards, again

It is an old Bill Parcells term for having to travel less distance to score because of takeaways and kick/punt returns. The Cowboys just crushed this, with a phenomenal average starting position of their own 41-yard line. San Francisco started on average from their own 24. It wasn’t just on fumbles and interceptions, either. The special teams had another strong showing, with a staggering 181 yards in returns, boosted considerably by Lamb’s touchdown return on the onside kick attempt. Some still complain about John Fassel, but that makes little sense given how he has turned this aspect of the game around. That includes coverage, as Dallas only allowed 46 yards on kick and punt returns.

It was overall a big step forward. It may ultimately be too little, too late. It certainly has dimmed hopes of a top five draft pick. But for the players and coaches that will be back next year, winning does far more good than losing.

The recent buzz around the Cowboys has centered on defensive coordinator Mike Nolan potentially being replaced after the season. So when Mike McCarthy encouraged Sean Lee to go into coaching whenever he retires, many fans immediately sought to anoint Lee as said replacement for Nolan.

My list also includes a guy McCarthy talked with us (on his media conference call) on Monday: Sean Lee. No, McCarthy is surely not envisioning the linebacker make the leap all the way to the top of his staff. (See my notes below). But there is this: “If you’re dumb enough to get into coaching,’’ McCarthy told Lee, “we should definitely talk.’’

I’m a fan of Lee but not a fan of a player going straight from being “in pads’’ to “in charge.’’ Lee, should he opt for retirement anytime soon, would be wise to serve an apprenticeship before taking on a title. I do hope that apprenticeship happens here at The Star. It seems McCarthy does as well.

“We talk about a lot of things,’’ McCarthy said of him and Lee. “He’d be a great coach.”

Who are the likely candidates? - Bruce Feldman, The Athletic

Late on Tuesday night, Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin departed for the Auburn head coaching vacancy. That led to Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore quickly popping up as a favorite to land the job at his alma mater.

Bryan Harsin’s frustrations with the Mountain West and Group of 5 life became public earlier this month, and now he’s jumping into the teeth of powerhouse football in the SEC West with his move to Auburn. He leaves behind one of the best G5 head coaching jobs in the FBS.

Everyone has won at Boise State in the past 25 years, piling up staggering win totals. Harsin’s .793 winning percentage is actually the worst of the past three head coaches who have coached the Broncos in the past 20 years. And there are a bunch of former Broncos who would make some sense as the next man up.

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, the greatest player in Broncos history as a record-setting QB under Petersen, has risen fast in the NFL coaching ranks. If the 32-year-old Washington native wants the job, it would be hard to imagine they’d turn him down. Moore is a legend in Boise. He holds the all-time FBS record for wins by a starting quarterback, going 50-3, and he finished No. 4 in the Heisman voting in 2010.

The Cowboys need to win this week and see the Washington Football Team lose in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. With Washington playing their game earlier on Sunday, it was possible that they could be eliminated before even taking the field, but not anymore after a schedule change by the NFL.

The Washington Football Team can eliminate the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys from the NFC East race with a victory Sunday. The NFL won’t take the chance that the Eagles-Cowboys game — which had a later start time — won’t have any meaning in a national window.

The NFL announced the Week 16 game between Washington and the Carolina Panthers has been moved to a 4:05 p.m. ET start time and will still air on CBS. The game was originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff, but a Washington victory would eliminate the Eagles and Cowboys from the postseason (Eagles-Cowboys is scheduled to kick off at 4:25 ET on Fox).

With Washington playing simultaneously as the Eagles and Cowboys, the showdown between the two NFC East rivals obviously has meaning. The winner of Eagles-Cowboys will still be alive in the division race — if Washington loses — while the loser will officially be eliminated from the playoffs.

The Dallas defense has been ridiculed all year long, but they’ve been on a hot streak as of late with regards to generating takeaways. Embattled defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who has stressed the importance of takeaways since arriving in Dallas, hopes to keep it up.

“When you’re in the dry spell, you feel like it will never come,” defensive coordinator Mike Nolan said. “But I think as we’ve said all along we’re just in the process of trying to become some things that we weren’t in the past, one of them to be a team that gets some turnovers.

“But you can’t just talk about it. You have to work on it, and it doesn’t just change overnight — evident by this.”

Five of the seven turnovers these past two games have been fumbles. All of those fumbles have been forced in the first half to set the tone and stake the Cowboys to an early lead in both games. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence has forced two of the fumbles. Defensive end Aldon Smith has recovered two fumbles, returning one of them 78 yards for a touchdown.

“Hopefully this trend continues for us,” Nolan said. “The balls just aren’t falling out on their own. We’ve been able to create them. Guys have knocked them out.”

Much of the attention for Cowboys rookies this year has centered on CeeDee Lamb, but Neville Gallimore stole a bit of the spotlight on Sunday with his best performance of his young career.

Gallimore finished with a season-high five tackles (one tackle for loss), a pass deflection, and a quarterback hit. This isn’t the first time Gallimore has shown he can be a big-time contributor on the Cowboys defense.

In his second career start against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 9, he graded out as one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL in terms of run defense grade, run stops, and run stop percentage according to Pro Football Focus.

The Cowboys potentially have a solid four-man rotation set up for 2021 on the interior defensive line with Gallimore, Antwaun Woods, Eli Ankou, and a healthy Trysten Hill. Of course, they’ll still need to address it in free agency and the draft, but that’s a pretty good starting point.

Tony Pollard’s two-touchdown performance in his first career start on Sunday in place of the injured Ezekiel Elliott had many fans wondering if it might be time to move on from their star running back in favor of the cheaper Pollard. Stephen Jones hit the brakes on that talk, though, when asked about it on Tuesday.

Could Tony Pollard be a full-time running back?

Jones: “In this day and time, there’s not many that do that. I certainly wouldn’t bet against him. I think when we first drafted him, it was more of a change of pace, complementary guy that was going to be great in the return game and spell Zeke. Certainly surprised every step of the way in terms of the number of times he can touch the ball.

“As I said, I think they’re a great complement to one another. I wouldn’t bet against Tony if he had to touch the ball. I think he ended up touching it 20 times — I think it was 12 rushing, and I forget the exact number, eight to 10 passes he caught. So, whether he can run the ball 21, 22, 25 times a game, I don’t know that, but as I said, I wouldn’t bet against him.”

Dak Prescott is not under contract with the Cowboys after this season is over, and while all indications are the two sides will work out some sort of deal, it’s always possible that the quarterback could end up elsewhere next year. But what would be the ideal landing spot for the young star?

Mike Sando, NFL writer: Detroit would be an interesting possibility. Send Matthew Stafford home to Texas and let him finish it out with the Cowboys. The Lions would get a young leader to rally around under a new staff — a fresh start.

Lindsay Jones, NFL writer: If the 49ers were to try to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo, that’s an intriguing prospect to me.

Bob Sturm, Cowboys writer: I believe the line forms to the left on how many teams would wish to have Prescott in their room. Chicago, San Francisco and Detroit seem all like obvious places, but there are several more that would jump at the rare 27-year-old UFA QB1.

Sheil Kapadia, NFL writer: I think there are a lot of teams that would aggressively pursue Prescott. What about the Patriots? Prescott doesn’t produce a lot of negative plays and has high-level intangibles in terms of leadership and work ethic. He’d be an upgrade over Philip Rivers in Indianapolis. And he’d be a home run in Washington. The Bears and Broncos would make sense if they were able to afford him.
